Just got back from LA to The Bay Area

No Stops.
No traffic.
Driving Mode: Smart (100% of the trip)
About 90% of the trip was on the Smart Cruise Control set to 80 mph.
HVAC Off.
Average temperature 50°F.

Have to mention that the Dash MPG Readout is very accurate.
341.6 Miles ÷ 10.867 Gallon = 31.434 MPG
In my opinion, that is pretty good for going 80 mph.

That is exactly what we got (31 mpg) on a 400 mile round trip from Denver to Torrington, Wyoming at 70-75 mpg highway speeds yesterday, in 40 degree weather. Not exactly stellar, a 20% drop from the EPA rating of 38 mpg combined.

I would honestly be pleased with that given the conditions.

Really? Sorry, but I am not pleased with the results. If a vehicle rarely reaches the mileage estimates and only under perfect conditions, then disappointment is to be expected. We really like the car otherwise and won't be selling it anytime soon.

I understand being disappointed, but if you are driving in mountains at high speed in winter it is not realistic to expect meeting the EPA estimates, either, especially in an SUV. That's why I'm saying I would be happy with that 31. Now, if you want to argue that the dealerships should have informed you of this reality when selling SUVs, I'm right behind you.

Kia doesn't set the mileage estimates the EPA does. I always check Fuelly to get a more real world estimate before I buy. EPA numbers are not realistic for most people.

That's definitely a good resource, though Fuelly has some very strange engine/configuration options that makes it difficult for me to easily know what I'm looking at. The engine configurations, for example, don't make sense to me.

It is amazing how much better mpg you can get by paying more attention to the power usage meter. I've learned this from my Fusion hybrid. There are times when you can give it much less gas and achieve the same speed just by watching the meter. Coast more into a stop or start dragging the brake when exiting the freeway much sooner to get more regen into the battery. Float more into corners, being less agressive with the pedal goes a long way, it is almost like a game. My wife on the other hand has no concern about the mpg or trying to increase what she can get, I'm sure she doesn't even know there is a power meter:) or would ever look at it if she did. She just loves the car and would if it got 20mpg like her Element does.

These are the speeds that the EPA highway ratings are based on.

60 mph is painfully slow speeds compared to a real world freeway drive.

Actual MPG drops sharply at high speeds, because, well wind resistance increases dramatically as speed increases.

My guess is if you drove the speeds in the epa chart above that you would surpass the epa highway mpg rating.

It is like a game! I like it. It's a cool challenge to see how high I can get the MPG up to. I got a 41.5 "score" going to the grocery store and back yesterday. I also have a an SQ8 that challenges me in different way.:giggle:

For what its worth ... we just drove home a BRAND NEW 2023 Hybrid EX yesterday. We picked it up in Auburn, AL, drove it down to Destin, FL area, which is about 200 miles and change (current odometer this morning is 232). We wanted to be kind to it since it was so new, so we did NOT blast down the interstate, but instead traveled the state roads, 55-65mph the whole way, and I did NOT try to "game" the mileage. Verdict: 42.8mpg. I'm VERY pleased. Super mileage, and it's not even broken in yet!

As a bonus, it was a very relaxing drive = no semi's and jerks ripping by us, plus it was closer (in distance) and only about 5min longer. Googlemaps says:
via I-85 N 3 hr 38 min 198 miles
via I-65 N 3 hr 37 min 217 miles
via US-29 N 3 hr 43 min 187 miles <<<=== as I've often found on our trips, interstates aren't always the best answer.

Congrats on a Great vehicle! nice milage figure! Going on our first long stretch next weekend to upper MI. ( 430 miles) Hope I can get that milage.....
In Michigan likely not, but do keep us posted. I would expect low 30s for a long trip in winter unless you are going 80.

Ours got great mileage on the first trip home from Colorado Springs to Denver. Must be something about going downhill most of the way. :)

I test drove a 2023 Sorento Hybrid today. Nice car but virtually impossible to drive without getting the engine turned on. Is the Sportage the same way? That might be a reason for dissatisfied people.

Are you talking about a plug in hybrid or a standard hybrid?
