Sportage Hybrid Real World MPG?

No car I've ever owned got the posted mileage. Just had a 23 Hrv that was rated at 28 combined and got 25. I'll be totally happy with 33 mpg in hybrid mode. This is our 3rd hybrid and first Phev. There are a lot of tricks to increase your fuel mileage that you learn over time of ownership. Now if you drive like my wife who seems to always be in some kind of race I would expect lower numbers.

They rate the ICE Sportage at 32 mpg on the highway, so in the real world it probably gets 28 on a good day. It probably has a average of about 25ish. No car I've ever owned got the mpg it was supposed to. Maybe if you live where it is mostly flat you'll get the posted mileage but I live in the PNW and there is nothing flat here. I think getting a 1/3 better mileage is worth it. I'm totally happy with getting low to mid 30's when in hybrid mode, we replaced my wifes Element with the Sportage that got maybe 20 mpg. And the first 32 miles that cost about about $1.50, plug in version, is ALMOST priceless :) The last car I bought for myself is a Hybrid and with the fuel savings over time and the higher initial cost being off set by a much higher resell I can't see myself ever buying a ICE again.

Kia doesn't set the mileage estimates the EPA does. I always check Fuelly to get a more real world estimate before I buy. EPA numbers are not realistic for most people.

It is amazing how much better mpg you can get by paying more attention to the power usage meter. I've learned this from my Fusion hybrid. There are times when you can give it much less gas and achieve the same speed just by watching the meter. Coast more into a stop or start dragging the brake when exiting the freeway much sooner to get more regen into the battery. Float more into corners, being less agressive with the pedal goes a long way, it is almost like a game. My wife on the other hand has no concern about the mpg or trying to increase what she can get, I'm sure she doesn't even know there is a power meter:) or would ever look at it if she did. She just loves the car and would if it got 20mpg like her Element does.
