Replacing Heater Switch in Rio?

I'm wondering if anyone has replaced a heater switch on a Kia Rio (or any other car for that matter) and is willing to offer some advice on how to remove and replace the switch.

There are a couple threads about broken heater switches on this forum, but none contain information on how to actually replace the heater switch. I started this thread in the hopes of getting instructions or advice on how to replace the switch.

I found this drawing which somewhat shows the layout of the switch itself:
Image

The middle part seems straightforward, just two plugs to remove by depressing the tabs on the clips.

However on either side (the heat control, as well as the vent control) are attached on the back with a pull cable wire, similar to a hood pull cable. I'm not sure how to properly disconnect these two cables in order to remove the heater switch.

Initially, it seems like needle-nose pliers would be required to bend the wire back, and release the pull cable. However I don't want to attempt this if it's the incorrect way to remove it, since I don't want to damage it in any way.

I've also checked the Kia shop manual (available at kiatechinfo.com) but it doesn't seem to contain procedures on how to replace the switch.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Kiaowner...
Are you asking about how to remove the fan speed control switch?
Here are some pictures:
1,2. Remove knob by pulling straight out
3. Press this tab
4. Push switch up
5. Pull switch out

Thats It!

Rio767Pilot,

Thank you SO much for the pictures and description, it is greatly appreciated! :)

I think that is exactly what I need to do to my heater switch console; replace the fan speed control knob (and/or harness). Your pictures and instructions will be incredibly helpful on how to replace that piece.

However I am still having issues removing the entire heater switch console unit (that you show in picture #1). When I unscrew the four screws, the console only comes out about 2-3 inches or so which doesn't give me much room to replace the knob or plug.

What do I need to remove in order to get the entire heater switch console out?

Kiaowner... The reason why you can only pull so far is that the temp and deflector knobs are on a wire. They are attached to a plastic pin on your heater box. I think you can see them if you look under the dash (see pix 3). The temp control is on the passenger side behind this panel. (see pix 4). I think you can remove the glove box and have access. They x-cross. Also, on 2 pictures, you see a clip that you have to remove that holds the wire on the pin.

Well, I had to pay for flight school, so I was a studio and wedding photographer. What do they say, " A picture is worth a thousand words"! I will continue to help out in anyway. My Rio has saved me on gas to and from the airport.... This forum has saved me from the "big" timing belt disaster!

Thanks a million

Rio767Pilot,

In this case, to me it feels more like "A picture is worth a million words". I can't describe enough how thankful I am for your help, with your pictures and description I feel more than confident enough to tackle this issue on my own. I've ordered a salvage heater switch console that is ready to be picked up tomorrow morning, so your reply couldn't have come at a better time.

Thanks once again, and may your skies be clear! :)

In the 4th pic, look in the upper right corner and you will see a metal clip. These need to come off to release the cables so you can remove the assembly. Sometimes there is a prong to make sure they stay seated. Make sure that prong goes into the cable at the same spot when you reassemble.

I just replaced the one in my wife's 03 Rio Wagon yesterday and when I took it apart, the wire harness was plugged into the socket(back part of the switch), but that was not connected to the dial(front part of the switch) and it was stuck on low speed. Last night after replacing it, the fan was working great. Today, she said the A/C light was flickering(A/C has not worked since I owned the car and the light has never come on) and said the fan stopped working again. I found that if you press on the switch it would work. Like a loose connection on the back. So i pulled it apart again today and I found that the two piece switch is starting to come apart like the first one. Just enough though, to cause the switch to loose connection. It almost seems like it is getting hot and melting the plastic enough to cause the two pieces to separate. It took me a while to find a replacement and I don't want to have to try and find another.

Anyone see this happen or have any ideas?

I think I found it, according to another thread on these forums. The part can be purchased here

..and with more detail here

I have the same issue with this switch, most times Speed 4 works, but when its cold, and the tollerances are higher, the speed # 4 doesnt work unless I push in.
Thanks for the great pics and description guys!

03 Kia Rio blower control knob

I have a 03 Kia Rio and my blower knob doesn't hit all the settings without pushing it in. Sometimes it won't pass the 2nd setting. I saw on a post from a few years back someone did a temp fix with super glue. If I choose to do this, do I have to take the whole assembly off or just pull the knob out??
