Turn signal issues

Has anyone else had issues with their turn signal not working correctly? Specifically at random times when I press down on the stalk to turn left, the signal will not start flashing. I have to flip it back up and down again or press down just a bit more to get it to start blinking. It only does it on left turns. Even on lane change as well.

I have that also, on rare occasions. I figured I just wasn't pressing it down far enough. It's infrequent enough that it's not really a problem, but it is a distraction because every time I put on the left blinker, I check the dash to see if it's blinking.

I have started to have the exact same issue on my left turn signal only. If I flip it back up and down, then yes it will eventually work again. But it has becoming annoying. And I am one of the people that hates it when the person in front of me doesn't signal on their turn, so I don't want to do that to people behind me.

Did either of you guys or anyone else on this forum figure out the issue with the blinker?

Thank you.

Just wondering, do the turn signals actually light up (corners) or is it just the light in the cluster? Do you guys hear the clicking sound?

It's possible the relay is malfunctioning or as someone else has mentioned, the actual stalk is shorting out or connection is loose.

I would also check the bulbs, sometimes a defective bulb can cause intermittent issues.

The times when it appears to fail, I'm driving, so I can't step outside and look at the outside lights. The dash blinker indicator does not light and there is no clicking sound. If I jiggle the stalk, it'll start working. It's only on the left indicator. The right side works consistently.

@Kia-Driver pretty sure it's the stalk in your case. If warranty has expired, I would check if harness is not loose and if it's making a good connection. Also, if this is the case, your turn signals are not lighting up. You'd want to make sure, you'll either be stop/ticketed or can cause an accident.

I tried to find something related to the sedona but could only find couple stuff for an Elantra. It seems you would need to remove steering wheel, not 100% sure though.

Interesting discussion. We are having similar issues with our '15 Carnival (Sedona).

Still under warranty, thankfully. Just had it in at the dealership a couple of days ago. After testing all day they couldn't get the issue to occur, but, they removed the stalk assembly and tested it, also compared it to a new one and it all checked out ok. The next step is for them to replace the Smart Junction Box .
The fault has been gradually getting worse over time. It is doing the not working thing when indicating left but the majority of the time (when it does fault) when indicating left the right indicators operate, not only is this embarrassing it is also extremely dangerous.
The service guy is going to discuss it with head office and see if they have had other reports of this issue.
I will send a link to this discussion to the service department as well.
If they do eventually find the cause of this I wonder if it will lead to a safety recall as it would likely be classed as a safety issue.
Next time it happens, if I can, I will drive it straight to the dealership without turning the car off and hope it will do it again while there.

Exact same issue with my 2016 Sedona. It started a little over a year ago where the left blinker would fail to turn on on rare occasions. It has become progressively worse over time and now it happens more regularly (although still inconsistently) and sometimes it'll even turn on the right blinker instead! Sometimes it'll work normally, but will activate the right blinker for a few seconds after the stalk returns to the center position.

I took my 2016 Sedona SXL to the dealership for this reason a couple of months ago, too. My left turn signal sometimes doesn't turn on, and occasionally even signals right. But most of the time it works. When I took it in, the woman who checked me in was able to replicate the problem and see it for herself, but the technician wasn't able to. He said they couldn't so anything since he didn't see it.

Same here. The dealership replaced the "multifunction switch" and it completely fixed the blinker issue. When I first took it to the dealership, they couldn't reproduce it because it was so intermittent so I came back with a video of it not turning on the blinker and also turning on the wrong blinker and they fixed it up. As with yours NZOC, mine has a better feel now too.

Luckily, mines hasn’t shown so far. my turn signal bulbs are incandecents. Normally got direct feed wires unlike LED bulbs.
IMO: Possibilites,
1) turn signal relays(blinker)
2) The Stalk.

What will I do: - 1) If this issue happens, I will activate the hazard right away. 😬. If hazard working well then, you can isolate the problem in switching(stalk/signal lever).

Good luck & Stay Negative✌

Thank you for going through this effort. I have a 2017 Kia Sedona that I have had intermittent left turn and driver side sliding door issues with since 2018. My vehicle is just outside the recall dates for the turn signal issues and extended warranty for the switch. I just filed a complaint with NHTSA and Kia corporate. I don't know what to do at this point. Had it into the dealer 8 times over the past 3 years. I think they are pushing off any fixes until after my warranty runs out which is very soon. Finally was referred to a 2nd dealership service center. Crossing my fingers!

If you do get hit, make sure to tell the insurance that Kia knew your car was unsafe and you asked them to repair it ;)...

will keep that under check, but how can you notice this kind of issues : when someone you know follows you and tells you, or when you look at the reflection of the car in windows, in other car's reflections, etc? I would check it with the car stopped but seems like this happens intermittently and with the car in movement.

A WD40 fix would actually sound like you changed the blinker fluid ;)

At the dealership now...saying they will try to diagnose the issue. I showed Frank the service guy the forum stating what the issue is and what seems to fix it and that it usually only happens when the car is in motion. He said they will diagnose and let me know. I’m surprised no recall has been issued on something so dangerous and we as customers have to pay for this issue.

First I had the original appointment set with everything listed to be done, only to be told they wouldn’t be able to get in done in time. They give me a loaner, but I had to postpone leaving for out of town, so they can work on it on Saturday. The dealership fixes 2 of the 4 issues, but needed to order parts for the sliding door recall and multifunction box.
Next day driving to DC the passenger airbag light comes back on that they supposedly fixed on Saturday from the recall. I take a picture and email it to the service department that the wiring harness must still not be fixed. They tell me, I might have to pay a diagnostic charge...I refuse and now they will look at it again.
I get an email stating all parts have arrived. I call and ask to verify all parts including multifunctional box are in...the woman confirms and books appointment for Saturday 8am. Receive a call Friday night to confirm Saturday. Arrive Saturday to be told I don’t have an appointment, but they’ll get me in. While sitting in courtesy vehicle... get a call asking if I’ve arrived for my appointment! Seriously!
Get a call after getting home that the multifunctional box is not in yet, so the car will need to come back again!
Dealership finally got the multi function box in, but now says the earliest they can get the car in is the beginning of July to install it! I guess it’s no big deal that people have almost slammed into the back of my van multiple times, because they think I’m turning right , when I actually activated the left turn signal. How this is not a mandatory recall with over 18 reports to NTSB is beyond me. I’ll pay the $600 as it’s a small price to keep my family safe, but unfortunately it will take a major accident it looks like before they issue a recall! Very disappointed overall with Bev Smith Kia service.

Having the same issue. only effect is on the left side when I partially press it to get the three blinks for a lane change. works fine when it's pressed all the way down. I might try the wd 40 trick if I can get time to take the switch out. seems to be gunk buildup since I rapidly operated the switch up and down and it stopped the problem for a couple of days.
