Hi All, Does anyone know who actually makes the 3.5 V6 engine for the
Sorento? I heard rumors the Sorento had the Mitsubishi engine and drive train in it??

Hyundai participates in an engine development program with those companies for the 2.4L engine. It is built by Hyundai in a Hyundai factory. Newer engines are all built in a Hyundai factory. Hyundai is developing its own engines for most of their models today. It is wishful thinking to say otherwise. I come from Nissan Corp. and don't believe everything people are saying is fact. Considering all the problems with past engines and drive trans I wouldn't want to blame Mits or any other car manufacturer for Kia and Hyundai sloppy builts of the past. While I am at it, so what if Hyundai "borrows" technolgy from more established brands or work among the various groups? In the end it should strengthen Kia and Hyundai as a more reliable product which is what we all want I think.

There may be more to the story about Hyundai/Kia engines and can be found below:

NEW MIND-SET
Indeed, Hyundai is hoping its investments in engines will distinguish the company from its competitors. Until 2000, Sonatas sold in the U.S. came with engines based on technology developed by Mitsubishi Motors Corp. In a reversal of fortune, though, both Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler (DCX ) have adopted the new four-cylinder Hyundai engine for their small and midsize cars -- and have paid Hyundai $57 million in royalties for it. "It's like a student outsmarting his teacher," gloats Lee Hyun Soon, Hyundai's engine development chief.

Personally I think it is really smart business wise. The more manufacturers get together on things such as engines and transmisions co-developing them only benefits us the end users.

I mean look at GM. The Saturn Vue has a Honda 3.5l V6 and transmission in it. Smart thining on GM's part. I mean lets face it with them if it isn't an OHV engine they seem to have build quality problems. They source the engine from Honda and presto they have a bonifid contender.

When I first heard the 3.5l in my Sedona(at that time) I was actually fairly pleased. Mitsu knows how to make engines so I figured it works for the so go with it.

DEman get real- if mitsui. knows how to make engines, my mother in law is my new best friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a 3 liter chrysler voyageur in the early 90's - a mitsubishi engine and it was just crap. The valve train wore out every 15000 miles- i mean " wore out" with the valves dissaperaing down the block!!!!!!!!!. I had friends who had the 2500 turboD in their pick up -- heads goiing every 40000 miles. Same story for Shoguns. If anybody cant make an engine - its mitsuibishi. My Sorento is a Hyundai engine. If you go back in the posts on this last year - you can tell by the engine numbers.

Perhaps they have changed- well I hope so. In fact, I dont think there are many manufacturers who want to make a good engine. The philosophy is to engineer to the lowest accepatble tolerance. i,e for mr general public- just get pass the guarantee period and hard luck if it blows up one day outside the guarantee. It just would'nt pay a manuafcturer to make an engine for life. Engineering history is crowded with fine companies who went bust trying to make the best. Perkins diesels are a classic example. Over engineered - would never break , but where are they now??/ Gardeners same story , and what are we left with??

Anyway its about time we had a new concept. the up and down pistons are long pass their sell-by date.

i was working on a forklift in large multi company building in Pitman NJ where there was an "authorized chrylser engine rebuilder"

i noticed that there was numerous what seend to be Clark forklift engines, mitsubishi (4G54) engines, so i said to the guy 4G54's and he laughed and said they look identical don't they, they are the chrylser spect. version and are junk and the parts they spect for overhaul are the same as oem, low quality parts

the industrial version of the same engine is bullit proof as he stated and i can attest to that also execpt to a few head gasget failures

so the same engine can be built to different spects

it seems every time i see oil smoke comming out of a tail pipe it is a chrylser product with a mitsubishi engine

Yep ,beyond help- its the afterburner kicking in!!!!!!!!!!

Realy want to know about rotten, crap, shiity engines go no further than VM diesels. The ruination of Chrysler in Europe. To sell their voyageur in Europe, before Mercs came along - they put a road version of a marine Diesel in the mpv.
Beautiful engine 2.5 liters td giving loads of torque. beautifully designed and well thought out - just one problem the heads went ever 30000 miles. We are talking about individual heads- on the cyclinders- This should have been perfect , but in reality became a nightmare for chrysler in Europe as after about 3 years of trying to put it right, they just gave up- and could'nt even give the car away... And Chrysler was always known for its engineering ability....

Whats even funnier is Land Rover used that engine in the Range Rover classic for a couple of years and got exactly the same issues, this was a good 5 years before chrysler started fitting them, how I laughed when I saw that engine under the bonnet of a jeep

WOW nice sarcasm.

Yes I know the EARLY 3.0l Mitsu engines were crap. Sorry about your luck with that one but they have improved their quality over the years. Case in point my father in law had a 3.3l Chrysler in a '90 Caravan and when he traded it the engine had 280000 km on it and it burned no oil. The transmissions kept falling out and that was the only reason he got rid of it.

He now has an '97 Grand Caravan with the 3.0l that you say is crap. Well I can tell you that engine has 252000 kms on it and it burns very little oil. So yes Mistu engines used to have their issues but I would say they have their act together.

But I guess what concerns me more is that if you are such a conisseur (I realise I have probably spelled this wrong) of engines then why exactly did you even bother buying a Mistu engines Sorento?

No Deman- my knowledge is gained thru years of bitter experience.. I do not pretent to know more than you or anybody else on this forum ( how's that for modesty!!).... mitsui in MY SORENTO - you may be right . you may be wrong.
Honestly, you made me think again... but my engine is coming up to 35000 kms and has been running on lpg since new and I have no problems.I didnt bother to find out who made the engine when I brought it- but was assured by KIA in the uk it was a "KIA" engine - what ever thats ment to mean. Hope to see you one day in Canada- use to work in Montreal

Sincerely

Chivea- honestly I dont know. Kia will say its their motor. Others say its from Hyundai. I know its a bit of mercedes, somewhere, Theres a bit of bosch somewhere- As the Diesel Sorento ( well probaly) is assembled in Austria my guess is the engine is made at the Steyr plant,,, but this is just pure conjecture.

Just one overiding consideration - its a dam good motor. in a fantastic vehicle. but me I prefer a v6 because i just like a soft pur bellowing out power. That's what you become when over 60!!!!!! not clink, clang, clonk any more. Ever ask yourself why Porsch never buit a diesel??
