Parking Light Issues

I am not sure if it is a sign or not to drive the thing off a cliff or not, but the wife came home yesterday and the parking lights will not shut off. Also, the door chime is going off as if the key is still in the ignition (which it is not). I had to disconnect the battery last night to try and save it. So today, showed her how to put the terminal back on and then it would not turn over. Told her I would look at it when I got home.
Get home, throw the terminal back on, starts up, lights are off! Making supper an hour later, look out, yup, they are back on  Pretty much at my wits end now, I swear if you look at it the wrong way it will implode!
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks as usual

ok, you have been here more than a year now.
How did you manage to not fill out profile with location and details about car? It matters in terms of any part of the car - engine size, location of fuses, electrical equipment...

Location - temperature makes difference.
For instance - in your case, after a heavy rain some water could although should not drip into a fuse box causing some short circuit. But if you live in Alaska, rain is not really possible now...

Damn, my laziness is showing through :)
It's a 2001 Sportage 4x4. Although I don't live in Alaska, I am in Canada, on the east coast. New Brunswick to be exact. Now yesterday was warmer than it should have been and we had a nice snow storm this past weekend. I thought that perhaps that it has gotten wet and causing my issues. Just seems strange that it would last two days.

I think it might be water related as well, that or you have a wire that has the insulation damaged and is supplying power to a wire to the park lights when the switch is off.
