So I'm shopping for a new Kia Sportage EX. I went to one dealer in central Florida and they have 7 Sportage EX's on the lot. They say I'll have to pay MSRP plus an $8000 market adjustment fee, a $999 documentation fee, plus the normal sales tax, registration fee, etc.
Is the $8000 market adjustment fee and $999 documentation fee typical? They tell me that these fees are typical in today's market. Is that true?

Thanks.

Well they certainly wouldn’t tell you that they’re the only dealer charging an extra $8k.

Dealer markup isn’t uncommon, but it isn’t typical. Shop elsewhere and farther out. Each dealer can charge something different. Some may have markup upfront, some may say “MSRP” but have a couple thousand in mandatory addons, I had one tell me that they do MSRP for residents within a 50 mile radius.

Heck, to save $8k I’d consider flying somewhere and drive it back.

That is outrageous. Avoid that dealer completely. Post the dealer name here. Everyone needs to stop protecting these jerks.

I was recently on the market for a new Sportage EX. I checked three different dealers in central Florida and they all added a "market adjustment fee" of around $8000 and a $999 documentation fee. I was able to talk one dealer into reducing his market adjustment fee to around $5000, and that was as good as I could do, even though all three dealers had between 7 and 15 brand new Sportages on their lots. I then checked at a Kia dealer in Michigan who I delt with a couple of years ago, and they sold me the same vehicle with a $595 market adjustment fee and a $260 documentation fee and no other fees, except for the normal sales tax, license plate, title, etc.

You can pretty much pay for car transport around $1200 from anywhere in US; but I would recommend taking a drive to Georgia and buy one there; heck those are made in Georgia. There is nothing wrong with buying out of state, most dealers do it on a regular basis.

I live in Pennsylvania and bought my KIA in Ohio and got a good deal drove back home happy. They gave me a tag in the back window to drive on that was good foe a month. then they sent me paperwork to register and pay tax in Pa All went well and saved me a lot. Just like the song gos my mama told me you got to shop around

I am supposed to get my PHEV in a couple weeks and I can honestly say I'm a little scared of the dealer adding stuff at the last minute because they know I want this car and I've waited so long. I have an agreement (over text) on the price (and it does include Junk dealer-addons, but not horrible). I've heard dealers padding junk fees in (document, etc). I picked this dealer because of the reputation for honestly.

I doubt I will walk away unless they go way over board and I hope they honor the text communication agreement I've had (and double checked several times with them). The PHEV prestige is so rare and I don't want to go looking or waiting. I'm lucky enough that the price really isn't that big of deal to me, but honoring an agreement is.

I'm thinking my only recourse would be to smear their name everywhere I can for not honoring the agreed price.

Freedom Kia (Exit 153 on I-79 in Morgantown, West Virginia) had about a dozen Sportages and Sorentos on the lot last week when I was there.

No added markup and no required packages, just the usual sales tax and doc fees. They sell a lot of cars to out of state, so that's no problem.

We've bought 3 Kias from them and were always treated right. I recommend Allen Johnson as a sales rep. He is an honest guy.

Morgantown is located about 1-1/2 hours south of Pittsburgh PA. You can fly into Pittsburgh and take a commuter plane to Morgantown.

I bought my 23 Soul last September. My local dealer was one of the few who didn't want to charge me a "market adjustment." Interestingly, they told me that for "out of town" customers, they did charge a markup -- I can't remember how much it was, but maybe $2-3k? He said they were prioritizing their in-town customers. I had called around to different dealers, not just Kia, when I was shopping, to ask about the market adjustment, since NONE of them advertise it on their website (bait and switch). Most were charging anywhere from $3000 to $5000 if I remember correctly. I was shopping about a 150-mile radius from where I live. The adjustment on hybrid vehicles was the worst. Everyone was also charging a deposit ($500-$1000) to hold a vehicle since inventory was so low. I talked my dealer into waiving the deposit for me, but I am a repeat customer so they were willing to work with me. Good luck, this market is tough.

Omg that's a lot. I had to go out of my state to order my 23 Kia Sportage hybrid ex premium vesta blue cuz everywhere in my state wanted way over MSRP. Only thing over is the riva braking system that's around $400 better that than paying 2500-3000 over MSRP. I'm just waiting for Kia to fill my order and start making the car

Kia will never see your “order”. You are waiting for an allocation (already built car) to be assigned to your dealer. Depending on the color/trim combinations randomly produced by the factory AND the pecking order you dealer has w/Kia USA (who assigns the allocations) AND the pecking order of your dealer’s other customers waiting on that car, you could be waiting a very long time.
Keeping calling/messaging other dealers. Until you get a VIN # (means the car is on a boat), you have nothing but a promise. Don’t place a deposit until you get a VIN #!…

I would tell them to pound sand! $8k!?? Isn't their a dealer association or a number at Kia to let them know they are rapping people off? I realize that they can charge what they want and you can shop around but that dealership needs to chill.
For that price you can get a fully loaded Toyota Avalon..

ZERO.................I walked in to the dealership a week ago, told them get me a red one, AWD, with premium package...............told them i wasn't paying for any of the add on stuff, no paint sealer, etc..............then said i was gonna offer $500 less than sticker...............as of today, there is a new sportage sitting in the garage...........never pay over sticker...................

Here on the west coast you're going pay a markup on any Sportage Hybrid above a Lx anywhere from 1500 to 5k. If you tell them no they will just say next please. And a lot of them are going to also make you pay a grand or 2 for extra's you don't want, nonnegotiable. 95% are presold before they even get to the dealer here and the rare one that actually hits the lot is gone in less than a day.

Totally agree with @89sandman; You can find ICE at or below MSRP; but HEV and PHEV are so rare you should expect to pay. I'm tracking PHEV Prestiges since they were released and there are less than 800 in the United States. The only way to get one without ordering is if someone backs out; and if one is freed up there is usually a line the dealer calls and it's sold within hours.

Similar story in Toledo, local dealership said they start around 8k over sticker for a black EX last month. I said I would pay MSRP and basic fees. The lowest I could get them was 3k over MSRP. They let me walk out the door and said they would let me know in 6 months if their inventory allowed selling at MSRP again (they had around 8 in stock with more on the way). Found the exact car an hour drive away and bought it for MSRP the very same week.

What was the actual price you paid for the car and which trim level then the out the door price? Always interesting to see how much taxes are in other places on larger purchases.

I think I got a smokin' deal. Took me weeks to find and spent a couple of hours each day looking all over the west coast.

Hybrid X-line PHEV

$38,500 for the car.

$39,870 out the door with tags, title, plates and all taxes and fees.

Good for you. Did you get any state rebates? This question is really only relevant between comparable local purchases...I paid half what you paid for taxes, reg & fees. NH is one of the least expensive states to own a car!

Working with Kia in Morgantown, WV -- all legit, so far no market adjustments or BS undercoating protection packages. Honest etc. Require a deposit (which goes towards cost of purchase), most likely since I'm out of town to ensure and confirm the "ordering" process for the car.

Just crazy, I'm in Atlanta, the car is built 2 hours from my house....Yet it's cheaper to buy in West Virginia....That is messed up.

We bought our third Kia from Freedom Kia in Morgantown last year - one of the first '23 Sportage LX AWD's off the truck. Paid MSRP minus the military rebate. They have always treated us right since we bought our first Kia in 2013. (We live in Morgantown) Hope you enjoy yours when it arrives.
