How do I make the door/seatbelt chime die?

You know, the incessant dinging when the driver's door is open or when your seatbelt isn't fastened? I asked the service department at the dealership to disable it, and was told it's illegal for them to do that. Does anyone know how I can do it myself? I'm about to tear the dashboard apart. I like my car, but I don't need it to be my mom!

There. Now it says where i am. Does this help?
Sorry, it doesn't help me, as you are not in the UK. Hopefully on of your friends 'from across the pond' can shed some light on the legality.

A simple check... Do you know if ALL new cars in the US have this feature, if not, then it won't be a legal requirement, that is still not to say that the dealer can 'actually' turn it off.

Where does the 'ding' come from? Does anything else use this 'sounder'? If not, you can possibly just disconnect it.

I don't know about all, but in my experience most new cars have a noise alert when the driver's door is open with the keys in the ignition, and many have a seatbelt reminder. But my car doesn't just do it when i first start the engine, it dings seven times about every 30 seconds until i put it on. I wear my seatbelt, but as a pizza delivery driver, i am in and out of my car 20 times a day. it get's old. I can't tell exactly where the dinging is coming from, somewhere up front is all i can guess. If i knew where it was, i might be able to disconnect it myself. i just don't want to go pulling wires. And the guy at the service department at the dealership said by law they are not allowed to turn it off, since it's a safety feature.

can i still wear my seatbelt with the plug?
Just use the plug on the passenger side, the seat thinks that the pizzas are a 'person' thus you are getting the beep. If you are only getting the beep from the drivers side, then I can't think of a solution apart from - if you can locate the switch wires in the seat belt anchor socket you could 'possibly' bypass the switch. I don't know if this will have any effect on the airbag operation and seat pre-tensioners (if fitted).
Hopefully someone else might join in with an answer.

or, i could find a mechanic who doesn't work for kia and would be willing to help me out...i can't imagine why it's illegal to make modifications of this nature to a car you own. like i said, i know when my door is open and my seatbelt is off. i don't need my car to be my mom. i'm not going to give up on this one.

Maybe I shouldn't reply to this as my rio is a 03 & may be different. But I would try the interment switch on the door jam it is a push switch and makes an open circuit when the door is closed, stoping the chime. Now all you would have to do is find the wires and disconnect one creating a permanent open circuit. Good luck & hope this helps.

Not sure how to disable it, but I know where the dinger resides. I stumbled across it when I was installing my new head unit a couple weeks ago.

You have to take middle panel around the stereo to get to it. From there, you should be able to see a little black box to the right, almost above the glove compartment, kind of suspended in mid-air. It should have two little brass colored cymbals visible on the side. Those cymbals are what make the ding when hit by a hammer from within the box.

How cool is that? I thought it would be an electronic buzzer kind of thing, but that is pretty neat that it is an actual metal bell. :p

But back to the topic: I would assume there is a plug on the back of the box you could probably just unplug. That would make sense to me, but I can't verify that because I wasn't poking around for this particular issue.

I do agree though, the dinging can be damn annoying sometimes :) Let us know if you try it out and it works!

yeah i think last night i realized it was coming from behind the stereo, and also yeah i figured it was a real chime and not electronic, but i know what i'll be doing this morning...taking the stereo panel off and killing the dinger! thanks for the info, i'll report back on my success, or lack thereof.

success!!! i had to take the radio out to see the chimes on the side of that silver box, and just to be sure i put the key in the ignition and sure enough, i could see them swaying as the chime sounded. it is kind of neat, though, like a little music box. a freaking annoying, two note music box. anyways from there it was a simple matter of unplugging the wires and tada! no more chime. i am going to love going to work tonight and delivering all those pizzas in blessed silence. thank you for your help!

A little late to the party here, but I know my chime drives me crazy, too. We do have seatbelt laws, but when I'm just running across the neighborhood or just being lazy, I'd prefer to not have the car remind me every 27 seconds.

In fact, my manual states that it should stop after apx. 27 minutes... but it doesn't!!! It just keeps going and going and going....

Anyway, I really don't want to completely disable it, so I've somewhat designed (in my mind only at this point) a way to bypass it:

It's easy enough to find the wires to the buckle portion at the floor. From there, use a switch for toggling on/off. Use the kind of relay that holds the circuit closed while energized but releases when you kill the power.

From there, flip the switch to bypass, flip the switch back or turn the key off to reset.

(hmm, going back, I guess you could tap into the wires at the 'musicbox', but that would also kill the door open chime... you know, just in case you forget your door is open

Wire Wires Wiress and Sensors

I agree don't go messing with wires around the seat, even removing a seat can sometimes set off the airbag, I just bought my first Kia :p but i used to do alot of stereo installs and i know in the 06+ sunfires if your not careful taking the stereo out you can set off the airbag, just to make my point :) nobody wants to get hit with an airbag when they're just trying to make a noise go away :p or pay for a new airbag for that matter

i am driving a 2007 kia rio and i also have a seatbelt reminder (the dinging) but when i start the car and the seatbelt lamp starts to blink, i fasten the belt and unplug it again and the lamp stops to blink. after that i can drive the car as long as i want with no seatbelt on and nobody reminding me about it... i hope it will work for you too. good luck!!!
