Clicking noise when I hit the brakes sometimes

Hey all, just noticed that when I hit the breaks rapidly, there is a noise which sounds like a relay contactig just below my shifter lever. I can feel this contact through the shifter as well. It does not happen all the time, I just noticed it when I was stuck in traffic and tapping my brakes. Does not happen when I do a regular brake. Any ides?

Just experienced the same thing. I put the problem into "search" and got a lot of answers. One told me what parts his dealer replaced. Armed with that information, I took it to my service center and they had to order the parts. Now corrected and hear no clicking sound.

All Sorentos do that. It's just take some time to notice it.

I have sat in a brand new 2012 Sorento for a test drive and did the break release test (Put the Parking Brake, Switch to Drive, Apply Brakes, Release Brakes) and sure thing, you could clearly hear the solenoid.

Don't sweat it. It's part of the reason why the Sorento is 10K less than it's competitors. They have to save some money somewhere...

This "noise" is never going to be fixed as long as it's the same solenoid.

Funny, the shift lever on my cheap $18K Cruze doesn't do this. In fact, I've never heard a noise like this in any of my previous 25 cars either, most of which were automatics.

The fact is it's a shitty design and needs to be fixed. There's no excuse for a $30K vehicle to make such an obnoxious, cheap-feeling noise. It sounds like it was designed by the Yugo team.

I noticed that sound the first few months of owning it but it has seemed to stop or my radio is too loud to notice. I only notice the back seat squeaking from time to time but that is on my list of things when I feel like going to the dealer, again the radio fixes that problem.

Totally agree with jfischer.
it does happen to me sometimes as well, welcome to the world of kia motors.
Totally lack of quality control for certain crucial features as brakes, for a nearly $30K vehicle it shouldn't happen, my other car kia soul! had same issue its first 1K miles, took it to service and hasn't done it again in almost 4K miles. Again guys this is totally unjustifiable mainly due the fact I do drive in a very conservative way, extremely conservative way I must say.
I don't even want to imagine a reckless and irresponsible person driving a kia vehicle, it might fall apart in less than 30K miles!.
For the same price I should have bought a hyundai veracruz GLS or a preowned BMW X3(fully covered, including oil changes and everything you can imagine, including brakes but the tires). Being my 4th kia vehicle in 4 years, I have no excuse to blame anyone but myself for it. I never learn.

Funny that I don't hear any noise in my Sportage! I have had it for 3 years and 65,000Km and it still drives perfectly. No noises from the gears hift or anywhere else. So it can't be a quality issue. Just a design issue which should be corrected!

Is the noise only heard in the US version or is it universal?

This noise only seems to be in vehicles that have the gated automatic shifter and not the shifters with the release button on them. My 09 Optima has this type of gear shift and makes a clicking noise when I am going really slow and stopping. It drives me crazy, but it is somethiing I have learned to lived with. What it is doing is actually unlocking the shifter so it can be moved past neutral when the car is stopped. Since this type of shifter doesn't have a button to actually lock, this is for protection of the transmission so the shifter can't be shifted past neutral while driving. So this is much more than just a brake shifter interlock. When going past 3mph, even if your foot is on the brake, the shifter will not shift past N. This system is a bit more complex than other shifters because it is tied to the speed of the car.

FYI, I brought my Sorento to a different Kia dealership this week, and they aknowledged the issue and ordered the faulty selonoid. I didn't have to push for it at all. As soon as I mentionned the issue (I didn't mention that I already asked the other dealership), the girl seemed to know what I was talking about and said they were going to take a look at it. I'll let you know if it fixed the issue once it's installed.

What would have been nice is if the gate deactivated only when in N and stopped/slow and activate, and stay in place, once in forward gear. In this way too the selenoid would see less movement and last longer as well. I still haven't encountered the clicking issue yet though..............

Hi, this is just to let you know that I had my Sorento fixed 2 weeks ago, and I no longer hear the clicking noise when I hit the brake. Ask your dealer to fix it, there is a cure (replace the solenoid)! :)

What does it show on the receipt? Does it reference a part number, recall, TSB or something else?

I hear it too but it doesn't really bother me. It only makes noise when I'm travelling below 5 km/h, I believe.

It only happens on the higher versions of sorento's as the cheaper model have a button on the shifter lever to change into drive, park, reverse etc. I have a friend with the cheaper model and he doesnt have the same clicking noise that I have.

amazing that some people talk up a storm about crap cars they are like the two in this forum but if you could afford a BMW why did you buy a kia, knowing that you would have had all that service included? dumb a$$, you buy what you can afford. on anothe rnote great article because i do here this in my kia 2011 v6 unit US based model. When i come to a stop it clicks and when i take off it clicks. i just ignored it lol. figured it was the trans shifting back and forth from take off to stop.

I did my own fix. The problem is with the plastic locking piece wearing out on the shaft it rotates on. I ended up taking the console out (a simple job) and using an O-ring to fix the problem. I put a youtube video out there on my fix. Search for "Kia Sorento Brake and Gear Shifter Clicking Noise When Brake is Pressed" on youtube.
