Drove into town last friday stopped car, came back to it 5 minutes later turned key, car started engine misfireing, would not rev up, white smoke pouring from exhaust, running just as though the timeing was out, turned engine off restarted same thing, switched off waited couple of minutes turned the key engine fired up as normal, except a bit of smoke from exhaust, no check light came on, took it back to dealer, they checked it out could find nothing wrong, anybody had this problem, it has not done it again, and seems to be running ok. (Murphwiz any ideas)

White "smoke" (actually steam) can be indicative of head gasket failure. Take a look at your oil and your coolant. Coolant in the oil makes it look like a chocolate milk shake (DO NOT RUN MOTOR IF THIS IS THE CASE). Oil in the coolant usually floats to the top. You may also notice that you're losing coolant but not know where it's going.

There are two ways to test for head gasket failure without taking the head off.

The commonest by far is to pressure test the cooling system. It doesn't need a lot of pressure..maybe 1 bar/14lb sq in. Leave it for 10 min and see if it drops. There should be no significant drop. If there is..and assuming your testing kit is not leaking..then the head gasket is leaking. All dealers should have the required kit to do this.

Less common is the chemical test where you add a chemical to the coolant. If exhaust gases are getting into the coolant it changes colour. I think its a simple acid/alkali test with exhaust gases being acidic and coolant being slightly alkaline.

Either way, with the symptoms you have reported its worth checking it out further, if only to eliminate it.
