I've had the car back from the dealership for about a week now with no problems. I asked for the old PCM back so I could take it apart to check for water damage. I just got around to taking it apart.

I didn't see any noticeable water damage. but what is this stuff?
Looks like ramyon noodles, ........ a better close-up would help.

If you have the time, try cleaning it with a non-residue electrical cleaner and give it a test.

Good to hear your back :) Those are lots of little jumpers, IC's and other electronic components :)

oh, thats the glue from the bottom.

Thats as close as my camera would take. I looks like corrosion though
That is corrosion at one of the surface mount capacitors in the foreground.

Zooming in, it looks like it could be signs of arcing / flashing - if it was corrosion it would be more widespread.

Moisture most certainly played a role, juts odd that it would be limited to only one spot, so possibly moisture and a poor connection?

The circuit boards have a good clear coat, and then installed in an hermetically sealed enclosure - that looks like moisture got in and attacked the only part of the board where it found an imperfection in the clear coat.

Water + voltage and the resulting electrolytic reaction with the copper PC board trace produces the blue-green gunk that you see.

A burnt / overheated track looks very different.

Sounds like you have a bit of electronic tech or engineering experience :)

Well I'm glad there is some sort of water/moisture damage on the board. It might not be a total confirmation that the problem didn't stem from a short outside the PCM, but it makes me feel a little better.

I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer to my problem. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.

I have a 2011 sportage with 85000 miles. The other day it rained very hard, that's when the trouble started. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence though.

first, on the day it rained, we drove somewhere, parked it, and when we came out, it wouldn't start.

electronics on, turn the key and nothing. No crank, no solenoid sound, nothing. I tried shifting it into neutral, repeatedly pressing the brake, e-brake... then suddenly it just started back up, and we drove home.

The next day I drove the car again. This time it died while driving, and I had to pull over. Eventually it started back up, died again, started up, died again, and I got it home that way having it die one last time before coasting to the front of my house.

I tried to diagnose the problem then. There is no check engine light, and no codes. If i turn the key to ignition and leave it there, initially i hear no relays and no fuel pump. Then, while still turned to ignition, the relays will click and the fuel pump will turn on, then turn off again, and back on, and off again seamingly at random.

Then sometimes, I can walk out and it will start right up no problem. When it starts up, I get down under the dash and push and pull all the wires and all the plugs, and i get the problem to replicate.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
It appears this forum took a left turn and I did not see a specific answer to the original question so I'll ask a similar question again;

My Daughters 2011 Kia Sportage 2.4L died while traveling down the road and it was raining, there was NO odd lights or notification just died.. The vehicle will NOT turn over but we can turn the crank by hand so the motor is NOT SEIZED, when you attempt to start the vehicle there is a single click but the motor will NOT turn over, the windows go up and down its NOT a battery, the fuses appear to be good.. Does anyone have an idea what this could be??

Thank you in advance,

Jake
