07 Rondo Thump/Knocking sound

Hello all,

Hope someone can help. I have a 2007 Kia Rondo...34,000 miles. I have a complicated matter and for this I will try to make as much sense as possible. A lengthy question/story so please excuse me for this but it is due to giving you as much detail as possible.

For the past 4 weeks, while driving, I hear a thump and sometimes knocking sound, faint sound, you cannot feel it but can hear it. It happens at speeds of 35 mph or slower and only when starting to come to a complete stop or going over speed bumps ( at slow speeds). It does not happen when I turn corners, although happened once, that is it. Mostly straight driving.

I tested it out and it does the sound more at speeds of 10mph or slower more. I even accelerated quickly and then let go of the gas pedal, another-words force the car to move up and down, as if someone was jumping up and down on the front bumper. This way it made the noise even more noticeable. I took it to 3 different dealers, including Kia... all tell me they see nothing wrong. I had the brakes changed and looked at everything. All good. New brakes, Rotors, everything. Still same sound. \

I looked under the car while I had a friend push up and down on the car, I can hear the sound but everything seems tight. The mechanics who all took a look , checked the suspension, Wheel barrings, Shims, everything.

I also check to make sure it was not something inside the interior that was lose or any toy, change etc. This is for sure a sound coming from the front area of the car.

The car drives fine...No pull, hesitation, nothing. I have 4 small kids and just concerned this may be a sign of something serious. The sounds resembles of something like 2 objects rattling against each-other, or a hammer being pounded on a piece of metal ( faint sound) enough you can hear it.

Should I be concerned? The mechanics, they all told me to wait it out and see if it gets louder or feel the car drive bad. I don't want to wait. Scared my wheels will fall off or something strange.

Is there something else you suggest I look at under the car myself or any symptoms to watch out for to tip me?

Sorry about the length of this. If I knew exactly what was causing it I would've made this more simple...but due to the reasons stated, I have no clue along with 4 other mechanics. I checked throughout the forum and did not find anything to convince.

Thanks so much for your attention and assistance.

Best Wishes,
Anthony:confused:

Anthony,
Did anyone check engine/transmission mounts? What I was thinking; however, I did not hear the sound, is that one of the mounts could be loose or giving a way.
Another possibility would be transmission/cv joints/boots related. They have some loose and "clicking" when you change load.

Finally, last place I can think of (at least now) that could create similar sound is suspension - strut mounts.

Thank you for your prompt expertise. I would like to think they checked the areas as they all claimed they did a complete 360 inspection. However, Would any of the possible situations be covered under warranty still? The 07 Rondo was purchased new in 2008 and it has 34,000 miles.

Thanks!

every and each.

And I forgot about stabilizer links (as conwelpic and p_mori7)... which are the most likely to be blamed now. Of course they would also be warranty covered.

sounds like what I had on my Rondo, bad knocking noise in front suspension area at slow speeds going over bumps.
Cause - excess play in both front sway bar links
Correction - supplied and installed new front sway bar links.

This was done at 59,000 km and no problem since (traded at 79,000 for my Soul). This was all covered under warranty, they knew about it as they had been notified of premature wear on this part and already had a set in stock, took about half hour to install - very quick.

When my Rondo had a metal rattle sound, they replaced the links, the sound went away, but now I have a ping pong ball in a coffee cup sound when I go over any moderate bump and up. Kia has checked the car, said it was the tires (snows) but I went out and had brand new Micheline MXV4 put on the factory rims. Sound is still there, so maybe it's the same thing. Keep us posted!

Thank you for all the responses. I will have it check out again. Just one more quick question. Is this, or can it be a serious problem if driven on? Will it get worse before something bad happens until I can get it to a dealer? I only have this one car and will have to come up with funds to rent a car while my car is in the dealership. (Unemployed)

I just drove it yesterday and it never made that sound for the entire trip ( 25 miles) until I just got home, grrrr. Although that's how it usually goes. Some days it makes the sound and some not.

Thanks so much everyone

would it be related to temperature?
if cold you can hear, if warmer - not so much?

I do not think any of the issues could be really dangerous. It should be a really loud and constant (not depending on ambient temp) noise to start really worry about.
I think you are OK now. You may follow KIA and drive it till it gets worse...

noisy stabilizer links are an annoyance, not dangerous.

JamesP -> your noise is often described as a single tennis ball in a 3 ball container, bouncing up/down. The old Sedona's used to do this as well. Due to front strut rebound damping.

Definitely sounds like what we in the UK call drop links. My Carens had same problem at 40,000 miles. Replaced under warranty.

The rears are now starting to give the "clunk" noise and dealer says he'll replace -under warranty - when next service is due in about 3 weeks at 60,000 miles.
apparently it's a well known problem, certainly here , and 40,000miles seems about the average when it shows up.

Thanks again everyone. In regards to PLP's question. It has no affect on temperature. Just does it primarily over speed bumps and uneven/ bumpy roads. It would give out a wuick knock or two then that's it. I do want to mention one thing I left out, I did notice once or twice, at slow speeds ( under 10mph) when turning left, I hear a faint click. However this happens once a week versus everyday with the thump/knock noise.

By the way, I have heard that Kia will not honor the warranty of any kind without showing them proof I kept up with maintanance? Since it only has 34,000... I had it check for brakes, installed them, checked fuel filter, the whole 21 point inspection, done all oil changed, other changes.. but not through a dealer. Most of it by myself or through a local shop. I do not have all receipts. Am I SOL?

Thanks

They can't deny warranty on a apart that is maintenance free. What does changing the oil or fuel filter have to do with the suspension? They are unrelated.

Anyone know if the links can be worn without being able to feel any play? Has anyone ever changed ones that felt okay and found an improvement? I would assume that you should be able to feel play if they were worn, but if not that would explain them appearing to be good on an inspection. I have some clunks occasionally as well and I haven't been able to find anything loose.
As for strut tower nuts, when mine were loose on my old Villager van, I had to get them in exactly the right spot before I found the play. They should have checked the nuts, but who knows.

The front end sway bar links are cheap enough, might go ahead and just replace them. Think of it as "preventative maintenance"! Fix them before they cause wear on other parts. I've used the Moog links before on other cars, definitely better quality than stock. On my 2003 Focus, they were a bit thicker and even had grease fittings. Check for any cracks in the boots on the ends of the links, if you can see the rubber starting to split, go ahead and pull them, should take less than an hour to change.

Awesome news Raizz!

I need to do mine also, didn't know it was such a common issue until I visited the forum today. I just kind of ignore the noises because the roads in my neighborhood are so rough. (the soil is clay and it's hilly, things tend to move around and flow downhill, so the roads get uneven really quickly)
