Hello Gagaway and welcome to the Kia forums.
The Defrost cycle is a Quickset for defrosting using automatic Recycle screen /upper vents 0nly. you can turn the aircon to work in hot to dry and de ice screen. ou also need to select the wiper / screen heater.
If you do not want the preselected settings you can use manually selecting what ever outlets you want.
The Aircon at hot settings works as the most effective demister and dries out the car and your wet clothing But you must ensure you are not using a recycle mode.
See your handbook and spend some time learning the settings that suit you.

Happy new year

Well, one of my biggest problem with the new sorento is that you CANNOT manually select whatever outlets you want. If I want to defrost or defog windows I want to direct air to both windscreen and also side windows, but this is impossible as the airflow modes in the car seems obsessed with pushing air to the floor. I want the air go to the windows both front window and side window and NOT to the floor and this is just not possible.

There are two reasons. First the amount of air going to the floor obviously reduces the amount of air going to the windows but there is also a second reason.
If there is fog on the windows there usually is also some moisture in the floormats and any hot air to the floor is going to heat that moisture up and vaporize it into the air and that moisture is then going to condense into the cold windows as fog. So hot air into the floor causes additional fogging. The designers of this car obviously have no experience with real cold weather motoring.

But in the previous models it is possible to stop the AC
I believe the AC is actually turned off automatically if the temperature drops below some value. This temperature is usually something like +3 or +7 degrees celsius as it is impossible for the AC system to work below this temperature. You usually cannot see this from the settings or lights in the dash but the AC is still off despite lights telling you otherwise. I don't know if any manual to any car model actually explains this behaviour but this is universal feature of all cars. The AC system just cannot work near or below freezing outside temperatures.

I don't usually use the front defrost button.

I hit the Mode button, with all the combinations of vent routings, then just scroll over to the windshield-only icon and crank up the fan speed a couple notches and maybe open the side window an inch. The fog disappears in moments.

We have pretty low humidity in CO. I suppose if it ever got to be a hot, muggy day I'd use the defrost button.

Okay, maybe I did not explain the problem I am having correctly. The problem is that there is insufficient airflow to the side windows. The wimpy nozzles dedicated to this purpose are not enough. To get bigger and sufficient airflow I would like to have both the windscreen vents open but also the vents in top of the dash that normally push air towards the head of front passangers. Now if I close the ones in the middle of the dash and leave the ones at the end of the dash open and direct them towards the sidewindow then I get enough airflow to the sidewindows to keep them frost free even when running the blower at low speeds that keep the noise levels comfortably low for long periods of driving and not heating the interior too hot. This is how many people including me keep the vents in normal driving during winter. But it is not possible in this car. I can basically choose whether I want to defrost the front window or sidewindows but not both of them simultaniously. And I do not want to continuously go into some defrosting mode if the normal mode during driving does not keep the windows open. The normal everyday mode should be enough to keep the windows open without any extra hassle of juggling modes to a special defrosting mode or two separate defrosting modes. But there is not such a sufficient everyday mode to keep the windows open. I want both the windscreen and also top of the dash vents open and floor vent closed.

I've never seen any car that allows the windshield vents and dash vents open at the same time. I don't find the airflow from the side vents any less than the other 2 vehicles I've owned that have had them. I don't live in a cold climate anymore but I live somewhere that tends to be very humid and the flow to the side windows has been sufficient to clear them of fog.

Don't know if this will help or not - depends on what model you have and how it is set up in Finland. In the Canadian EX, for use in a climate like Finland's, there is automatic defogging. A black plastic humidity sensor is attached to the top of the windshield to the right of the RV mirror. The operation is as follows, from page 4 - 155 in the manual:
_______________
Auto defogging reduces the probability of fogging up the inside of the windshield by automatically sensing the moisture of inside the windshield.
The auto defogging system operates when the heater or air conditioning is on.
This indicator illuminates when the auto defogging system senses the moisture on the inside of the windshield and operates.
If more moisture is in the vehicle, higher steps operate as follow. For example if auto defogging does not defog inside the windshield at step 1 Outside air position, it tries to defog again at step 2 Blowing air toward the windshield.
Step 1 : Outside air position
Step 2 : Blowing air toward the windshield
Step3:Increasing air flow toward the windshield
Step 4 : Operating the air conditioning
Step 5 : Maximizing the air conditioning
If the A/C off or recirculated air position is manually selected while the auto defogging system is on, the auto defogging indicator will blink 3 times to give notice that manual operation is canceled.
Do not remove the sensor cover located on the upper end of the passenger side windshield glass. Damage to the system parts could occur and may not be covered by your vehicle warranty.

The system has kicked in several times already this month, and it keeps both the windscreen and the side windows clear.

Saab is one car that had this thing worked out. I am quoting from 2005 saab 9-3 owners manual:

The following three buttons for air distribution can be selected individually
or in combination. Press the button or selection of buttons to produce the airflow you desire.
1) Airflow to windshield vents.
2) Airflow to facia air vents.
3) Airflow to floor vents.

I have owned, rented and work on hundreds of cars (Honda, Toyota, KIA, Hyundai, Fords, GM's, Chrysler's, Mercedes, Audi's, and finally BMW's), I have only had one car that you could designate both the dash defroster ducts and dash facial vents at the same time that was on my BMW, a 2005 330i

This is a handy feature when you have heavy humidity and fogged windows, so I know where you could use that feature, but even living in the southeast I have only used it a few times each year.

Solution ;)

Hi.
I'm new guy here - this is my first post.
I found this post because I have the same issue, and step by step - starting from here, I found important info.
If you still have question as above, maybe you can use the metod I found in official Canadian KIA Sorento 2016 user manual on page 4-154 and 4-155 - there is clear explain how to do it.
Because I'm new, I can't enter here link to the Canadian user manual.

Best regards.
