Noisy Transmission not covered by KIA Warranty!!!

I just changed the name of this post to update the problem

I have just had my 50K service completed and raised a problem... which I thought was the engine pinking.

ie at low gear/revs when pulling away.. the engine made a rattling noise which seemd like pinking to me.

I took an engineer out and he agreed it sounded like pinking... so yesterday it was booked in.

Seems the problem is not pinking but transmission noise and sounds clattery when accellerating in a high gear ie 2nd or 3rd at approx 10/15 mph.

The dealership told me that it is a known problem(From KIA UK) and there is no problem.

I am reluctant to accept this advice as my warranty has 6 months left.

Anyone else heard of this problem/ noise / any info at all please..

Thanks in advance

Further to the above.... interesting developments.

Spoke to dealership manager today, who was informed regarding the problem.

Apparently as my 05 Sportage is higher than usual mileage(51,000 miles), not many of you will have developed this problem yet.

But the problem is already eveident in the Carens as it shares the same gearbox as the Sportage.... (Is this true????)...... I've looked on the Carens forum and seems a post re drivetrain noise which is the same as mine.

The dealership manager said he could name a few Carens in the area with the same drivetrain noise....most cases seemed to be diesel.

The fault is known by KIA UK and will not be covered by warranty as the performance/usability of the vehicle is not affected!!!!

I rang KIA UK and they confirmed this. I also asked for an extended warranty on my Gearbox as this problem may be a pre cursor to a failure..... NO LUCK There!!!!

So basically KIA UK says, its ok if your car sounds like a bag of spanners they will not cover this 'quote' characteristic under the warranty.

Any ideas anyone????

It certainly seems odd that they recognise a problem, but then won't fix it!!

My advice would be to speak to one of these "Free for the first half hour" solicitors to register that there is a problem with your car and then if it does fail outside warranty and they won't fix it etc. you can then quote the sales of goods act that the car isn't "fit for purpose" and they were informed of the problem but failed to act on it.

If it's a common problem which affects different models, then it's obviously a design fault which they should fix.

Hopefully it won't come to that!!

Good Luck,
Phil.

Hi, I see KIA UK are as bad as KIA IRELAND who put everything down to a characteristic of the Sportage, I have a 2006 2.0 Diesel 4WD and have had a lot of different problems and when they can't or indeed wont fix them, its put down as a "characteristic" of the vehicle. I'm in the process of giving mine back...good luck with yours.

i do hear some chattering in my 06 sportage, but i thought it was my engine pinging before i read this thread.
well as per my experience, i can hear such chattering when i drive it without heating the engine up.
but when ive heated it up to normal operating engine temperature before i drive it, i dont hear that sound.

I have a 2005 Sportage 2.0 CRDI manual with similar problem, it’s only done 38000km. The noise starts at 1600rpm in each gear and disappears at about 2500rpm. I have taken it to a local dealer which informed me that it is normal. I could not except this and have spoken to a dealer on one of my trips up country in one of the bigger cities explaining the problem. The Service Manager acknowledged the problem and said it was a bearing inside the transmission that became loose inside the casing and that they have replaced 3 gearboxes because they could not get the casing. I then, back home took the car to the local dealer which changed their prognoses and confirmed that they have fixed one at the local dealer. They have ordered the parts and will contact me to bring in the car. This will have to be replaced under the drive train warranty. If this is a common problem, surely the factory should acknowledge this, fix it and replace faulty gearboxes with updated ones.

I emailed KIA corp re this problem and unfortunately they got KIA UK to respond :(

This is KIA UK's official line on this problem.........

Thank you for your email to Kia Motors Corporation received on 05 September 2007 regarding your vehicle. This has been passed to me for investigation and response; please do not consider this a discourtesy rather a delegation of tasks. I have tried to contact you on the telephone number provided but have been unsuccessful.

I am sorry to learn of the issue you have experienced with the gearbox on your Kia Sportage. The quality of Kia cars is the cornerstone of our customer philosophy, and we value all customer feedback. Please accept my apologies on behalf of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd for the disappointment and frustration this matter has caused.

On your behalf, I have been in contact with Service Manager at xxxxxxxxxxxx, and our Technical Department. Having now had the opportunity to discuss your concerns, I must advise that the diagnosis indicates that there is no fault evident, and that the noise described is a characteristic of the vehicle.

If you are unhappy with this explanation I would suggest that you have the part inspected by an independent engineer. I must advise you, however, that this would be at a cost to yourself. Whilst I appreciate that this response may be met with a certain degree of disappointment, I hope that you are able to appreciate our position in this matter.

I must also concur with the decision made by Mr xxxxxx xxxxxxx in our Customer Service Department; Kia Motors (UK) Ltd will not be extending the warranty on your Kia Sportage beyond the three-year manufacturers warranty. However, upon expiry of the pan-European warranty provided with a new vehicle, customers are invited to purchase an extended warranty from a Kia dealer or they are free to purchase a similar product from a third party. If Kia owners do not purchase such protection, any risk associated with ownership of the vehicle remains with the owner.

Finally, I would like to thank you for taking the time to contact Kia Motors (UK) Ltd in order that we may investigate and respond to your concerns.

Yours sincerely

re gear box

It seems the gearbox noise or failing seems a big problem for KIA and there owners . As I was speaking to a owner of a owner of a KIA sportage crdi XE 2006 with a 6 speedbox. He asked me if I had problems with my gearbox I told him the only problems I get is 1st to 2nd gear when cold . This owner as had 2 gearboxes fitted in 8 months and the 2nd gearbox is noisey and the owner is waiting for a reply from KIA as he now wants a replacement car or his money back. So this seems to me the gearbox is not suitable for this type of car?.

I have pursued this with Kia in South Africa and they have given me a copy of a Technical Service Bulletin acknowledging the problem (See below).

They have ordered the spares and i am confident that this will solve this for me.

I will update everyone once the repair was done.

Well done VNROAN...

I knew the noise was eminating from the input side of the transmission because its evident in mainly in 2nd 3rd and 4th at those rpm's and not speed dependant.

Looking at the TSB it doesn't mention Petrol engines????
Mine has the noise and is a petrol engine/manual gearbox
now Ive seen this I shall check GDS site again.

Thanks

Thanks for the copy Vroan. Dropped it of at local service centre.

Service Manager called back later in day and arranged fitting of new clutch.....

Service Manager called back next day to say, that this TSB is for diesel engines not petrol and the clutch is different.

So I am now still waiting..... At least they acknowledge now the problem, but are waiting TSB for Petrol models new designed clutch...

How long it will take is anyones guess.. the saga goes on. !!!!

Still concerned that it takes some-one like Vroan in S Africa to help me notify KIA UK of the existence of TSB's !!!!!!!!!
