My wife has a Sportage EX 2012 and the car does not go over 150 km/h (93 mph). I've already tested it with both automatic and manual transmission. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Tks

I have real difficulty believing #1 that the Sportage will go 149mph, and #2 that it would be controllable at that speed.

I've driven at 140-145 MPH, and it's pretty exciting in a sports car made for good handling, not a bargain SUV!

Same here. I pretty regularly do 80-85MPH on the highway, but when I've pushed my Sorento to over 100 it just doesn't feel as stable. Just as well, if I get papered at 30+ MPH over the speed limit my insurance will surely go up, and my wife will have a fit as well! :p:p

I suspect that getting much over 100 MPH is probably a bonus with this car. I did find a new car summary that listed the top speed at 206km/hr, so they thought it would do 128 MPH when new. I personally won't ever try to approach those speeds in anything remotely resembling the Sportage or my Sorento, but maybe that's just cautious ol' me, wanting to live longer. :p:p

As for the car suffering, I'd be a lot more concerned about you suffering when you lose control at 115 MPH and crash!:unsure:

If it won't go over 150kph I agree that something seems wrong despite any safety concerns or need to go that fast.
When you approach that speed what happens? Does it struggle to get up to speed or is it like you just hit a wall and it shuts off for a moment? I suppose there is a possibility that in your market the Sportage has a limiter set to 150kph but I would assume more likely something like spark plugs fowling or other common issues that may reduce power.

Hi tom93r1

the car loses power and even stepping on the accelerator all the way down, it doesn't resume... that's exactly it, it seems that the electronic injection cuts off the acceleration... does't have a speed limiter?

The spark plugs were recently replaced...

most manufacturers put a speed governor aka speed limiter on their vehicles. my 2002 Honda CR-V was limited to 109 mph.

I don't doubt the Sportage EX has a speed limiter. I'd be surprised if it was only 93mph but it could also vary by country. What speed rated tires were on it when new? Sometimes manufacturers will put a low rated tire on the car and electronically limit the speed so you don't over-drive the tires and sue when the tire fails. It could have come with some crappy P rated tire which is good for 93mph/150kph and they electronically limited the speed to exactly that.

I've done 160 km/hr no problems at all. The car is stable in a straight line and can be pushed further, but it is dangerous to quickly switch lanes at that speed. Acceleration wise, it does take time to build speed so I'd be careful not to overtake someone driving this fast. - I've got a 2013 model 2.0L

Dears,
To close the topic, I found out that the car limits speed because the Stability Control is turned on. When I turn it off, it accelerates without losing power - I don't know how far it goes, because I didn't risk knowing, but it doesn't cut acceleration.

Kinda' makes you think that the manufacturer knew something about safe speeds to drive the particular car at. ;) I haven't seen any speed limit for my Sorento, but the fastest I have tried is 95 MPH.

I previously had a Nissan 350Z, and I cranked that one up to over 130 MPH, and I didn't turn off any stability control, so maybe they also knew it was capable of that speed. ;)
