Has anyone had the factory unit installed? Our dealer quoted $1500 but I'm weighing my options. Per the dealer it doesn't utilize the front head unit to control the DVDs, which is a pain with little kids.

I think that little screen is absurdly overpriced. Even worse if not tied to the HU. Its a Kia afterthought and I suspect the problem is that the SXL design has the dual moon roofs which make no accommodations for a roof mounted RES. So its hard for Kia to put a RES in lower trim models....

Kia got the design right on the Sedona but options and trims need some work. The SXL is the worst offender. They should have the 8ps as an option in the SXL. or they should have a tech package for the SX.

For 1500 you can buy the kids tablets, ....doesn't help with very young kids but you can get aftermarket units installed as an option as well that mount in the headrests.

I am still trying to decide whether to get a Sedona.... the lack of a decent RES is one of the reason.

For 2016, you can actually get either of those options now. 8-passenger SXL or tech package on SX. Except, for some stupid reason, you still can't get an 8-passenger model with a sunroof...which is the biggest gripe I have about my 2015 SX....that, and at the time I couldn't get the tech package, but needed 8-passenger so I settled. Now I want to trade up to the 2016....

IMO, It's an impression that make sense, a symbol status and not the actual useability. Young adults doesn't need these even children 3-5 years nowadays are actually engage and entertained by kid's tablet. It's a setup that's been apply for children a decade ago but not in today technology world. If Sedona got a decent RES like Sienna or Od, Kia makes a home run in this segment. But Kia designers and study shows that the technology evolve faster and Van design should evolve with technology. If you consider these idea it makes sense in some point and it creates a belief that it's a unnecessary and not cost wise such additions.

My wife and I just bought an SXL on Monday. We weighed the pros and cons between the Kia and Toyota, the latter of which had a really nice entertainment package, even with the dual sun roofs. We opted for the Kia due to the Tech package that had the safety features and 'toys' we wanted after researching some ideas for entertainment. We're still shopping around, but we will likely get a set of them with two screens that hang from the headrests...they have headsets, and can play the same movie, or individually. All for under $250...

Yup..... even a 1000.00 is too high.

Buy some ipads and go to itunes and download the movies and let the kids watch the movies, read, play games.

Until Kia puts a real RES system in like Toyota or Honda or Chrysler....its not worth the money for such a dorky system. The Chrysler system is worth every penney with 2 rows of blueray capable system. Plus it has a rear hdmi input for games or other video.

...but I still love our Kia. Its solid.

love the rear entertainment

I purchased a 2016 Sedona one month ago. It has all the bells and whistles and came with Kia's rear entertainment package. If you opt for an video unit then this one is a winner (except for price). I also have a T&C with the 2 video screens and hate it.
The kia screen is a winner because:
  • It is closer to the eye level of my kids in the 2nd and 3rd row.
  • It is so easy to use since it is a self contained unit. Put the DVD in and press play, that's it. (comes with 2 wireless headphones and a remote although you really don't need the remote since the player is easily accessible from the front seat.)
  • Most of all I like it because it does not block my view out the back when looking at the rear view mirror.

I got a lead...

1)
Rear Entertainment System, If KIA could make it their RES monitors integrated to the back seats. Foldably flushing in all seats and
2)
make the center console removable. If that happens, It will be a near perfect MPV. :)
I agree with Spicy, that front center console should be removable... Especially in case of need of moving large things...
(...further reason for Kia to make to gear selector "retractable" a la Jaguar)

In regards to the RES and coming back to the topic of this thread:

Instead of the Dealer installed RES, Kia should be offering us this one: !!!!

Check this out !!

Starting at 3 min 40 sec

https://youtu.be/Zuqvc0FVj4c?t=3m40s

Why is this not available?

I briefly searched ebay for this... but if anyone can get a hold of this or at least a reference to it...

Please share with us right away...

Yup i agree with you.

Earlier today, as we took the van for a short drive, i measured roughly about 6 inch from the ceiling down is the acceptable "height" for a ceiling mounted DVD player, if it were to NOT compromise my view to the rear...
Any "taller" than 6 inches, and certainly i would see the bottom of the DVD in the rear view mirror.

That's really not much...

It would have been great if Kia could have made that available as an option, but for now, i think as you have pointed out, tablet and portable devices are the way to go....

My wife and I just purchased a 2015 sxl with the rear entertainment. We got it used with 1500 miles on it! I have to say, I'm a dodge guy and we traded our journey r/t in order to get more room. We test drove a sienna initially because of all the hype and decided we wanted a suv until we drove this...we love it. My question is this: it is missing the remote and headphones for the res. When my wife put a dvd in the player, it plays the previews but hitting the play button does not start the movie. Do we need the remote in order to scroll and select the play option? Also, will we be able to listen the radio while the kids watch a movie with the wireless headphones? Thanks for the help and I'm proud of our new kia.

Welcome and congrats on the move.

I love the Journey myself. It is sadly underappreciated by the general population.

I dont have the RES, so i cannot help you, but hopefully someone here will.

Thank you. Our journey was a 2010 and only had 50,000 miles. It was very nice with leather and third row but we just had our third child and with one in a booster and one in a car seat we found that it was difficult to actually use the third row. Add the fact that it left very little room to carry anything and we just needed as change or we definitely would've kept it because it was a great vehicle for us.
Yesterday I ordered a pair of headphones and a remote from our local dealer. They matched the online prices that I found and they will be in Monday. I also ordered a set of weathertech mats. The front are in the mail and they said the rear are just a few weeks from beginning production so they will call when they are available. I guess due to the reclining seats and res being a low production they hadn't made mats for them until now.

It seems weird that you have to order the headsets and remote separately.

Shouldnt they come wit the car? Or did you buy the car used?

Congrats on the addition ;)

We also got a small one this past month, and i am doing the night shift duty ;)

In total, there are only 3 Latch system in the Sedona. I wish they have at least one more, because the competition, the Ody, i think has 5 Latch system?!...

Yes, we bought the car used and they were gone when we looked at the van. The dealer was quite surprised that they were missing. No big deal though, we got a killer deal on our Sedona and it only has 1500 miles on it, so buying the remote and headphones was only a minor issue. I'm pulling the night shift the next 4 nights. My wife is a nurse and this is her weekend so let the fun begin! lol

I am a little bit of a cheap skate...so I ended up declining on the whole "rear entertainment" option. I am looking into hanging a 24" LG tv on the back of the 1st row seats (only 7 lbs.) and putting a thumb drive to the back usb port on the tv. I have some hooks that screw into the tv and they are really sturdy and will hang on the head rests. Has any one thought about this?
