I don’t know why it happens, but the switch could potentially turn on your headlights if left in auto mode even when the car is off! This has happened to me a few times! Before the recall, my fix was to avoid using the ‘auto mode’. By just leaving it at ‘on’ position, my Sorento had never ever turned the lights on and drained the battery all by itself. After the car is off and the timer turned the lights off, it always stays off. It is mind boggling why auto mode would turn lights back on in the middle of the night when car is off… but supposedly this switch recall will fix that problem.
I had a Chevy equinox and all of the windows went down in the middle of the night. Never knew why. I have a Kia Sportage now. No more haunted windows.

Yeah, this must be some sort of computer issue rather than stalk issue. I avoid using auto mode now and on mode has never accidentally turned on my lights on yet!

I’ve had the stalk warranty replacement but not really wanting to try auto mode yet. I suppose safest bet is to just leave it at off position.

I finally went in for my appointment last Thursday to have the switch replaced. After waiting 1.5 hours, the service advisor tells me they could not complete the fix because the replacement switch broke upon installation. And they don’t have another one in stock. Factory defect they claim. So at least I have my old switch back on. I’m inclined to just live with what I have, and make sure it is in the OFF position when I’m done driving.

That's my take on it. They contacted me to get mine replaced, but I just leave it on for now and it works fine. I might be gambling, but I have yet to have the lights turn on by themselves when the car is off. I don't have a problem with driving during the day with my headlights on.

I know Kia extended the warranty on the multi-function switch to 150,000/15 years but got a "voluntary service campaign" letter yesterday to now proactively replace the switch if your vehicle is covered. So I called my dealer yesterday and shocker, they don't have the replacement part. They did say this is not a "inspect and replace" campaign but rather "mandatory replacement" if you got the letter. They anticipate replacement parts within two weeks and put me on the list to call when they are in and apparently I was the only one on the list so far. Covers 2016-2018 model years but not sure if all trim levels or only some.
Be sure to check switch operation after the recall. Got my vehicle back and no high beam lights and switch was difficult to turn. I took vehicle back and ask them " do y'all not check operation of these switches after install?" Their reply was "no. Why would we?"

Yeah, they totally screwed mine up at 1st too. Only realized at home that whatever mode you switch to on the stalk was different than what the dashboard is telling me… had to go back to have it fixed.

I do agree it’s probably not worth wasting your time for… unless you’re servicing the car there anyways, then maybe it’s worth just to get it done?

Leaving it ON has never gave me any problems. It’s just the AUTO mode that’s problematic.
