My wife has a 2005 Tucson that won’t die leading me to believe Hyundai Kia is a reliable car.

Bought one used last year with decent maintenance records for $15k. So far over $7k in maintenance and repairs. Timing chain and guides. Exhaust cam (dealer keeps these in stock for that engine - wonder why?) Pcv valve (never done and not in maintenance schedule leading to bad catalytic converters). That will be fun and expensive as it’s part of the exhaust manifold. Engine flush. LKA camera only works when it wants to. Drain and refill tranny. Coolant flush. Oils changes. Tires this week. No problem with maintenance expense. Big problem with big repairs. Timing chain at 90k??

No wonder I drive a 1999 Land Cruiser.

2000’s Hyundai and Kia, from what I can tell was reasonably durable if frumpy.

Since 2011 they’ve been stylish, comfortable, well-featured but powertrain longevity/quality took a huge dive, spearheaded by the GDI 4-cylinders.

2022+ish is more unknown but since they’re selling like crazy anyway to the shorter-sighted (or leasees, those who want more for their buck now, etc), I wouldn’t expect any more than the bare minimum to be put into engineering. They’re not seizing en masse and without warning anymore at least, but since that and the anti-theft problem hasn’t slowed their sales down…

(oh yea and if you have a keystart model, you don’t have an immobilizer and are very vulnerable to theft/vandalism. Insurance rates may reflect it, I used a python lock to secure the steering column - but it won’t stop a window from being busted. Those went away in 2011 and didn’t come back until end of 2021 or so)

Sounds like a lemon for sure. I bought a 2024 Forte GT-Line have about 7k miles so far, been great so far. I'll drive it for 10 years before I think of any new car again. I don't think I would buy a used KIA, definitely want the 10 year warranty. You could try cutting losses and sell the car maybe? Also maybe find a shop that work on it versus dealer, they seem to be way more expensive. Hope everything works out.
