KIA Sportage 2016 Trunk Won't Open With Master Lock

Hi guys, first time posting here. (Solution at the bottom of this text)

I got my KIA Sportage QL 2016 1.6 GDI in December 2023. So the title says most of it, for some unknown reason the trunk will only unlock if the key fob is near or if the button on the key fob unlocks it. The master lock works normally on other doors, locking and unlocking when it's supposed to. However, when the doors are unlocked the master lock is blinking, indicating that one door or trunk is still locked instead of unlocked. This is a recent problem and I am yet to find a solution for the problem, seen a few posts online, not on this forum though, about the problem but with no solution. Has anyone encountered this before? Is there maybe a way to fix this on my own? The dashboard shows all doors and trunk opened/closed normally and all the doors lock with no issues. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: The problem was my oversight of the "temporary fix of the left backdoor lock actuator" which involved the repairman enabling the door to open from inside with the broken lock actuator until we got the part delivered. When he rewired the lock actuator to open the car door from inside at least, for the time being, it stopped sending the signal to the trunk to unlock, once we replaced the lock actuator, the trunk started working normally again.

Do a search here on this forum. I got into a long discussion with a poster about his liftgate. I listed a lot of questions for him. Come back post the questions I asked him with your answers and I will try to help. I explain to him using the correct terms is important so we are all on the same page. Master Lock makes padlocks so I have no idea what you actually mean. I am an automotive locksmith. We eventually got his issue figured out. Turned out there wasn't anything wrong with his. I also don't see your model level listed. They usually lock the discussion if you haven't filled all your info in. If they lock it just fill your info into your account and "I think" they reopen it. If not just repost and I will look for it. Maybe we can get yours figured out.
Hey thanks for your reply, sorry for any misunderstanding by master lock I meant the central lock on the driver's and passenger's door that unlocks all the doors and the tailgate/hatch/trunk. Also, thanks for the note hope my profile describes it well now, it's a 2016 QL Sportage 1.6 GDI.

For your questions on a similar post:
1. I assume you mean when you press the unlock button it's not unlocking the hatch instead of not opening it as you stated?
- Yes, it is not unlocking the hatch, I do not have a hatch button on the dashboard.
2. I am beginning to think you might have a manually only operated hatch?
-Yes, a manually only operated hatch.
3. When you press the unlock button on the fob, does it unlock all 4 doors and the hatch?
- Yes it does.
4. When pressing the hatch unlock button on the fob does it unlock the hatch?
- Yes it does.
5. Once unlocked does the rubber button on the exterior of the hatch unlatch the hatch allowing you to lift it open?
- Yes it does.
6. Does the unlock button on the driver's door interior unlock the hatch while unlocking all 4 doors?
- No it does not.
7. When you press the lock button on the fob does it lock all 4 doors and the hatch?
- Yes it does.

So I see what you wrote after that about the unlocking thing, the point is that the central lock button, just a couple of days ago, was used to unlock the hatch as well so that when someone who is not in the car can come and open the trunk without the key fob near. It doesn't work like that anymore. Instead, the central lock keeps blinking when you press the unlock button as if one of the doors or the tailgate is locked. I checked the manual and it states both of these things:
"The tailgate is locked or unlocked when all doors are locked or unlocked with the key, transmitter, smart key, or central door lock/unlock switch."
"If any door is locked or unlocked, the indicator will blink until all doors are locked or unlocked"

So this 2nd quote works in a way that when I lock the doors the indicator does illuminate, while when I unlock the doors, after driving, the indicator blinks until I lock the doors.

I was thinking more about this and didn't want this post lost in my previous post.

These vehicles have become overly complicated. Even more reason a wiring a diagram is needed. This circuit might go through the fuse box which they call a smart box or something like that and it has non replaceable (according to Kia but there's always a way) relays. Does it go through that? After that does it go the the BCM or does it go to the BCM first than the fuse box? Does it go from the switch to the latch directly (I have my doubts on this). This is why the entire circuit needs to be tested. Say you have a power command coming out of the switch but it doesn't make it to the latch. You have to test every point, every junction on the way to see where the fault is. 99.99% of people do not have this kind of testing knowledge. What sounds so simple on modern cars isn't always the case. I am very curious if you get this figured out.

There is a data PID just for the cargo light. In order for that to happen it has to run through something like the smart fuse box and or the BCM. If it was direct the programmer couldn't differentiate what state it's in (on or off) that's why I suspect the lock/unlock is probably controlled. Please make sure to let us know as this will help a lot of people in the future.
Hey, I edited my original post to add the info about the fix. It was my mistake that I forgot to mention that the back left door lock actuator broke a few weeks earlier, and the door couldn't opet from inside and outside, and a temporary fix by the car mechanic was to rewire it somehow to make it at least open from the inside. Which was fine at as we usually do not use that door often.

When he did that, the problem probably started, but we didn't notice it right away. When the new part arrived and he replaced it, the problem with the trunk not unlocking through the in-car button went away. So this "problem" will probably not be something people encounter often, if ever, however it's better to have the known solution if anyone wonders.

Thanks for your time, all the best!
