filling the gas tank to full

When I try filling the gas tank to full the pump always shuts off before the tank is full. I get a little over 3 quarters of a tank. Then if I wait a while I can add more and fill the tank up. Has anyone else found this problem?

I have the same issue...my wife has it figured out, but i can't quite fill it up. I've tried filling it slow, fast, in between, pausing, shaking the car, different angles on the pump...everything. It's just an airbubble I think, but for some reason only my wife can fill it up.

Good thing it's her car.

I remove the nozzle as soon as it shuts off and my gauge shows over the full mark on my gauge but I know there is a few litre left. However, be aware of the warning in the manual:
"Do not "top off" after the nozzle automatically shuts off when refueling" (P 4/22)

The best way I found to get the tank consistently full was to look at the layout of the gas station. I try and pick a pump that allows the Rondo to "lean" away from me as I'm standing there pumping gas. I'm not talking about excessively leaning, but most stations are laid out so that water will flow away from the pump. That is the kind of lean I'm talking about.

If the Rondo is level, or "leaning" towards me, the tank doesn't get as full. I discovered this while on a 3,000 mile road trip.

Good luck!

I have just recently noticed this happening the last two times I filled up. I did fill up at the same station these last two times, (different than normal) so I will have to look to see if it's the slant of the station. Good thinking.

Thanks for the replies. I think if I fill it real slow and stop often for just a moment then I can get it full but I'm not yet sure.

Topping off adds 5-6 liters of gas

Guys
I need some advice here...I understand that the gas tank should not be "topped off", but I find that with a 60 liter gas tank, I can usually fill another 4-6 liters (thats almost 10% of the stated gas tank capacity) after it auto shuts off the first (and usually a second time).

I normally fill up really slow - to the point where it often pisses off my wife, or anyone else lined up at the station, but I always get the same result - lots of room in the tank after it shuts off.

When my wife fills up, she stops at the first shut off, and we think we got an amazing fuel average (e.g. car ran 100km and took 10L to fill), as opposed to the real number, if I fill it, which would be 'car ran 100km and took 16L'

Any ideas on what the correct 'topping off' strategy should be?

read my quote above from Jan 23rd (#4), it can cause serious problems if you try to fill it to the neck like in the "old days". Its all to do with the emission setups on new vehicles. Also make sure you give three wrist flicks of the caps when you put it back, that way there is no danger of your engine check light coming on.
I just fill it manually (not using the holder) and when it kicks off thats when I remove the nozzle, it always shows above the full mark on my gauge.
