Cooling Fans

Have just read on here that both cooling fans should be running with the air con on, (Kia Sedona 2.9 diesel V reg)
I have had a look at mine and only the fan on the front of the radiator is running and not the one on the back of the rad.

Should the fan be running?

If so where do I start?

Check the relay in the main elec centre under the bonnet. Transpose the 2 fan relays and see if the fault moves to the other fan. If the fault does not change then get a multimetre or test light and check the wiring at the fan plug when the A/C is running to see if power is available. If you have power at the plug then the fan motor has probably failed. If it is not at the plug it could be there is wiring damage, or a crook fuse or maybe even the ECU is not sending the comand although I believe this is the least likely cause.

Have had a look in the fuse/relay box, there are three relays for the fans and two for the aircon also two fuses for the fans one 15amp one 20amp then also a square one marked 30amp.

All the fuses are fine

Moving the three cooling fan relays to alternate positions make no difference as the fan on the front of the rad continues to run with the aircon on.

Removing aircon 1 relay stops the fan on the front running. Transposing the two aircon relays only runs the fan on the front.

Have pulled apart the multiplug on the rear fan and tested it (four wires) there is no voltage registered.

Have shorted out the wiring to the fan and the fan runs so no problem there.

Just worrying me now as I tow a caravan as well so I want to know the fan will cut in if the car gets to hot, as well as coming on with the air con on.

Any further ideas on where to look? Or does it need to visit Kia

You could always try the "back-yarder" method of re-wiring it with a relay off the battery to a switch on your dashboard for manual control? Or even getting a thermatic probe so it'll run at a set temp.? I had an electric "helper" fan on one of my Suzuki Sierras running off a manual switch for really hot, heavy work.:)

Pepper you could well be right, I called in to my local Kia dealer and he said the same thing, the one at the front comes on when you switch on the air con, the one at the back of the rad only comes on when the engine reaches a set temp.

Hopefully you will confirm the same to put my mind at rest.

Have had to go back to get the aircon topped up today and a dye injected as I have a slow leak somewhere.

Both fans should run with AC on, otherwise only half the condensor gets an airflow at stand still, which will make your AC very in-efficient.
Check for power at the plug to the rear fan, remove the first part of air intake to airbox to access it easily, connector is right at the top on the nearside.

Kia dealer was pretty adamant that only one should run.

I have separated the plug to test the fan at the rear but there is no power there.

Put 12v across the fan and it runs so I know the fan is not faulty.

tried all the relays/fuses and it still doesn't run so not sure where to test next as the wires dissapear into the wiring loom.

Both fans should be running with A/C on. On a gas engine both fans are behind the radiator with the condensor fan on the passenger side and the radiator fan on the drivers side. The condensor fan runs at one speed while the radiator fan speed is controlled by speed and engine tempature via the PGM. There is a chart of it in KGIS.
