Battery light and brake light on startup

The battery light and the brake light remain on briefly (after all the other dash lights have gone dark) on startup after the van has sat for a couple of days. I suspect the battery is going bad. If I drive the van frequently, I don't see the lights but it's only happened twice.

Anyone else seen this as a sign of an impending disaster? Tell me it's not my alternator. I had all the oil leaks fixed.

Check your battery voltage at rest, should be 12.6 volts or very close to that. Anything much lower indicates a discharged battery. I'd have your battery load tested at a local parts store or even WalMart before anything else.

I had the battery tested at the local parts store, it's fine. On a later trip, the two lights came on permanently indicating the battery was no longer being charged. That's most likely a bad alternator. I made it 60 miles on just the electricity in the battery. When I pulled into my garage, the rest of the dashboard lights came on indicating the voltage had dropped too low to run the van any more. Got lucky on that one.

I put the van on a battery charger until I had time to order a remanned alternator from RockAuto. I took it to the garage this morning to get the swap done.

I did a long drive over the weekend and everything ran like normal. Rock Auto has the old one so I should get my core charge back soon.

Thanks for asking.
