4x4 Trying To Engage In 2wd??

Hey everyone, I just picked up a Sportage and I'm new to the forums;

I know there is tonnes of threads posted about 4x4 not working and I'm sure this same topic has been covered somewhere but I can't pinpoint the exact post.

So here it goes. My Sportage sounds like it is constantly trying to engage 4x4 while in 2wd. Driving at any speed you can hear some sort of metal tingy sound, almost like a bearing of some sort and when you slow down and almost come to a complete stop there is a pretty heavy bang sound and the noise goes away. Once you accelerate it starts up again.

It does not do this while 4x4 is engaged. I believe it is something to do with the vacuum lines and I haven't had the time to inspect it fully yet.

If anyone has any ideas or input it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum, Congrats on the purchase.

Could be a sticking auto Hub:

Would start by disassembling and cleaning the auto-lock hubs:

See this excellent tutorial from Galf, very helpful (should be made a Sticky), see page 2 for exploded view of Hubs ..

Link to Galf's tutorial:

Remove any excess grease / crud form the CV shaft splines, cleanup and -very lightly- lube the hub internals, put a dab of clean grease (1/2 teaspoon or so) at the top of the cv shaft and reinstall the hub..

Check those vacuum lines and repair/replace as needed,

Check the CV shaft for any excessive movement or play w/ the Hub off also.

Found the fix if anyone else experiences this issue. I just ended up replacing the vacuum hubs with WARN locking hubs. Fixed the problem immediately. Then I just disconnected the vacuum solenoid plug.

I recommend just replacing them anyway. The WARN are well worth the money.
