2022 Sorento PHEV acceleration issues

I have a 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV. It’s been at the dealership for more than a month while they try to figure out what’s wrong with it. The issue is random — it will suddenly just stop responding to the accelerator. Not completely (it will still go forward) but at a crawl. If it happens while I’m going up a hill on the freeway I can have the gas pedal all the way down and it will keep losing speed, never going faster than 45 mph, but the needle will be all the way to the right. Check engine light does come on. The first dealer I took it to said the car is designed to do this when it senses a problem with the engine, in order to “protect” the engine (I call BS). Second dealership took me more seriously and has tried changing the computer and now fuel injectors, but I’m skeptical the latter will fix the problem. It does seem to be related to the hybrid engine since when it’s doing this it will fail to switch out of EV and kick in the gas engine even though that’s what it should do during aggressive acceleration. At one point it was very low on charge and would not switch over to the hybrid engine at all … when I got to my destination the EV was down to 4%, which should never happen (gas engine should kick in at about 20%).

Has anyone else experienced this and did your dealer figure out the problem?

Sounds like you need to check into the Lemon Law in your state. In Virginia you only have 16 months. Kia will have to pay the lawyer and just about all the money you payed out when you bought the vehicle will be returned if they don’t provide you with a like vehicle. The only thing you will have to pay for sure is milage-which amounts to about .30 cents a mile (1/2 of what the IRS allows for business travel). I came close to having to do this myself with issues I was having since July with the backup camera not working and several problems with the displays either not working or freezing up. I really do like my Sorento PHEV and I hope I don’t have any recurring issues.

I had this exact issue with my 2011 Genesis Coupe and OBD2 said this was due to the throttle position sensing error. Ran into this about 3 times during the 12 years ownership, 90K miles. I never bothered fixing it and I traded with a new 2023 Sorento SX.

My Sorrento has had this happen about 7 times now. It’s been in the shop 3 or 4 times for weeks at a time. They haven’t been able to replicate the issue or provide a fix. Frustrating. We have videos of it happening and have had check engine lights but none of that helps them pinpoint what’s actually going on.

No loaner for me when I asked because I didn't have a CEL so they would need to find an issue first before issuing me a loaner, could've just been the dealership I went to, I could check another, I did ask if they have a TSB about it but he had no info about the issue. When it happened to me I was on the freeway and it almost seemed like it was struggling with gears but I could be wrong and could've just been some type of limp mode. I would just throw it in sport mode to get the engine moving which would help, but would come across the issue again during the trip when in eco mode. But after stopping and restarting, it never did it again but but I had the battery charged up again by leaving it in sport mode for awhile. I'm going to try replicate it this weekend.

Ours was in the shop again for 2 weeks and we just got it back. They weren’t able to replicate the issue nor did they have any fixes or updates from Kia.
When it happens again I may try to have it towed to the shop, keeping it running so the system doesn’t reset. I’m not even sure if that’s doable or not. Since the car has an auto shutdown in park I believe I’d need to keep it in neutral with the parking brake on for it to stay running.

It first started with some "stuttering" very intermittently, my husband thought it felt like a braking issue. Then in the last few weeks it has failed to switch over from EV to HEV when the EV battery is down to 1/4. It has happened on the highway, I tried switch into sport mode with no resolution. It will reset once it's turned off and back on. I've also tried using the paddle shifters when this has happened, and it wouldn't shift down further than 4th. In the last week while going up my driveway the engine will rev with acceleration, but the car will not accelerate and then suddenly there's a loud clunk stutter and then accelerate. The check engine light did come on when this happened but reset and cleared a few hours later when I turned the car back on. The check engine light came on again a few days later, stayed on for 2 days and has now reset again. I have recorded the events at least a dozen times with my phone. I have an appointment Thursday Decemeber 5th, the earliest availability. I'm wondering what the outcomes have been with others, I know this is an old post.

I just had this issue a few days ago on my 2023 Sorento regular hybrid. I noticed that it was not accelerating as quickly as it should be. Saw that it was in EV mode and that the gas engine would not start. I ended up pulling into a parking lot, shutting the car off, and then turning the car back on. It's been fine since. I checked All data for any TSBs and I did not see any. Will continue to monitor.

It was decided the transmission needed to be replaced. That was December. January the heater stopped working while in EV mode. Took it in and the said they fixed it. (Cracked water pump leaked coolant into the engine harness) Drove home, engine light turned on. And the heater was not fixed. Next day more issues. Odd stuttering, almost like a backfire. Wavering rpms while excelling even in cruise. Then the cooling fan that turns on/or stays on after turning the car off, ramped up super high and wouldn’t shut off until it completely drained the 12v battery. Car dead. Will start with a jump. Took it back in, and JUST got it back a couple days ago. They had the car for 9 weeks I think. It seems the coolant travelled further than they initially thought. Replaced the PCB or PBC and drove it for almost 100 miles, engine light turned on again. Failed O2 sensors. Replaced those drive it another 100 miles and it’s supposed to be fixed. Anyone want to buy a 22 Kia Phev?
