Hi, newbie here. Would really appreciate some help with removing the rear combination lamp assembly on my 2018 Rio 5-Door.

It's the first time I've had to replace the tail lamp, and like most other cars I've owned, I figured this would be a quick trip to the store for a new bulb, and a 10-15 minute process.

Three hours later, here I am on the internet asking for help.

The owner's manual and Gen 4 Rio service manuals I've found on the internet both make it seem like a simple process of removing two screws holding the assembly in place, and then sliding the assembly out of the car body.

That's not working. There must be a clip or other type of fastener near the front of the assembly. I can't get to it, and I don't want to try prying it because if I break that thing, it'll cost more than a busted bulb.

I've searched these forums, but haven't found a thread on a Gen 4 hatchback. It may be similar to some older generations, but I don't want to go on a hunch, and some similar threads show that the Gen 4 is at least different enough.

I can't see any other way of getting to this clip/fastener than removing the interior plastic body panels in the trunk. What a pain in the backside. Can anyone offer some advice?

Here's a video showing what the assembly looks like and the inside body panel.

I had to remove mine when I put a hitch on,, after removing the 2 screws. You have to pull on the assembly to release the 2 pins from the fender normally these are like 2 rubber grommets and slide right out .. not the case on the Rio they are plastic inserts and metal pins on the tail light assembly. It takes a lot of force to release them I’m talking to the point that they would break I put some grease on the pins hopefully they will come out easier next time

I also had a hitch installed (Draw-Tite 25004) by my Kia dealer last week... can you share what you tow with your Kia Rio.. I read where the Kia Rio is not designed to tow loads over 700 lbs (without rear electric brakes) and 1,100 lbs with rear electric brakes... and it is also advised that you should not tow these loads on a regular basis... because the Kia Rio is not designed to tow heavy loads.. I use the hitch for a bike rack for my grandchildren.. I am interested in what you have been able to tow with your car... Note: I have the 1 1/4 inch hitch...

I have a 5 door, and yes it took brute force, I tried a plastic tool and I cracked I tiny bit and had to epoxy it together, if you don’t feel comfortable pulling on the lamp assembly so hard, take it to a Kia dealership and if they break it they will have to pay for a replacement. Not going to lie on my 2022 5 door I was pulling the whole car towards me then pop it released not sure what type of idiot engineer would design this

Dang. Not something I wanna brute force.

I figure there should be a way to access whatever is holding the lamp assembly to the fender, from inside the trunk. Probably have to remove some of the trunk liner, and you're right, that would make it a stupid design choice.

I found this video of the same process for a 2016 Sorento. Does the fastening mechanism look familiar?

Great tip. I'll do that.

My main issue was just getting a grip on both sides so I could exert enough force to pull it out.

I had a ratchet strap, so I slid one end between the tapered end of the lamp assembly (near the push pins) and used that like a lassoo while I pulled on the other end of the assembly with my free hand. Wriggled it a bit, and it came out a few seconds later.
