While driving a/c work fine blows cold. when come to stop blows warmer drive again back to cold. checking further and noticed when a/c is first turned-on clutch will not engage tap the accelerator and clutch come on. turn off again and does the same. Did not check pressures yet but I'm assuming its good because when it works, I get between 40 and 50 deg. out of vents. could it be a weak clutch, and can you replace just the clutch? Any one experience this or have any ideas.

If the A/C is still cooling when "warmer" but not as cold, then the clutch is probably working. I have a 2017 and living in Vegas, this behavior has been normal since I purchased the car. It could be that the compressor is losing some efficiency because of wear. That will show up at low RPM's. The only way to solve that is a new compressor. A temporary fix is to have your idle increased if this is really bothersome to you. If you have no colder air when idling, then yes, it could be the clutch. I don't recommend just getting a new clutch on a 5-6 year old car because you will still spend a lot on labor. Most new compressors come with a new clutch built in.

Cars started having a variable displacement compressor in about 2012. These do not use a clutch but are on all of the time. I don't think our Kia has this type, but I could be wrong. If so, the problem is internal to the compressor if it is getting the right signal from the ECU. These are harder to diagnose and does require a computer to do so. If it is not getting the right signal, it could be a sensor. Perhaps someone here knows whether the 2017 had a VDC....

BTW, 40F is really good. The system can produce a certain 'temperature drop' across the evaporator which could be 40 degrees or so. If the outside air is say 90F, then the register would read 50F. You are only trying to get it down to say 72, so that would work.
You get max A/C from 1500 RPM up, so it is normal to get not as cold air at idle. If it bothers you, knock it out of gear and press the accelerator to raise the RPM.
Also don't forget the auto climate control is going to raise the air temp coming from the registers as it approaches the set point, to avoid 'freezing' the occupants.
I've said it many times, but simply set a reasonable temperature, like 73 for example, hit the 'auto' button and forget the thing, summer and winter. When it doesn't meet the demand when cruising down the highway with the glass all closed, then you have something to investigate.
