I believe the 03 is the same as an 04 and the fuel filter is under the car near the drivers rear wheel. No need to remove the fuel pump.

not true...I just had my fuel pump on my automatic 2004 kia rio changed under warranty...and they informed me my fuel filter is on the pump...was changed in 2004 model from under rear drivers side to on pump.... however as my dealer did the job i have no other mechanical guidance...good luck to you!

The fuel filter is located ON the tank, exactly where jcwit said it was. The Fuel pump is located IN the tank. It doesn't matter if it's a 2001 or a 2005 it's all the same.

 

Thanks I am going to remove mine to see if it can help fuel gauge reading.

while i am sure your diagram is correct...any reason my dealer would tell me my fuel filter is not servicable....and replace my fuel pump under warranty instead of allowing me to pay them to change a basic fuel filter?

not being a dick here, seriously because i looked for the filter for a couple of days based on previous posts....thats when i finnaly took it in...and got the aformentioned answer....

anyone else have this issue with the missing fuel filter....

I think the guys at your dealership are missing a few brain cells. That's the only thing that appears to be missing. That diagram is directly out of a Kia factory service manual for the Rio, which is available online. The only filter in the tank would be the screen on the inlet of the pump. Other then that my 04 has it in the exact place show in that picture.

 

So how do i get to it... and is it obivious to find...

 

if you look under the car. Drivers side. Near the rear tire you well see a black round piece with 3 hoses 2 on one side and 1 on the other side

So is it square because i see a square box... Not a cylinder.... only to hoses... by anychance can it be bypassed not by me but out of the factory wise.... and how do u take off the pump anyway its goin out....

ok is it in plain view... or is it behind something... cause i dont see it at ive looked by the passenger driver tire and all around jus to be sure but i cant find it....

 

Its in plain view. Is before the tire. Drivers side behind the rear door. Underneath. Do not look after the tire towards the bumper. You well see it. Its there. It has a metal strap around it. the strap is held closed by a bolt. Maybe its rusted or just really dirty under there.

 

jmorales828--Do yourself a favor and get out from under the car and drive it to a repair shop. They will not only show you where the filter is but change it for you before you hurt yourself or break something.

 

If you wouldn't mind posting back the info you do find out about your absent filter...that would be greatly appreciated because as per the info from my dealer mine was in tank with fuel pump...would just like to know if i have a bizzarro rio that is different from anyone else...I to could not find it where it is supposed to be, felt crazy....until the dealer could not find it either....

Yeah I went outside to jack it up and take a picture for you but it's way to cold out to be goofing around with that.

 

ok well ur rio looks like mine but im not stupid and im pretty sure i dont see it.... could it by any chance be in the tank cause the fuel filter is pretty big for me not to see it... I have the replacement filter already...

not mechanical but have changed a few fuel filters...and this car does not have one....and all the pictures and videos will do nothing for someone whose car does not have something where you tell them to look....an open mind is sometimes needed when things don;t seem to add up.....and we who see no filter are not stupid...it would be great if someone said oh really you have no fuel filter, that's wierd...find out about it and then tell us your story...instead of putting good people down for not just accepting your thoughts as gospel...very interested in what you find out...

We have looked at this with an open mind. We stated to look under the car by the rear wheel on the drivers side. Then he comes back with a post stating he can't find it on the passenger side. Come on.

 

Just got done going over the Auto Zone parts listing. KIA Rio's '03, '04, '05, all use the same filter, same part number, same everything. If he can't find the filter maybe in fact his car doesn't have one, but I doubt it. I've even seen posts on here about where are the spark plugs. Now we all know they have them unless its a deisel. Hey,here's idea, follow the fuel line back from the engine. Maybe you'll find something.

 

sorry guys sir rio is absolutely right ! they obviously pumped out a few cars from the factory WITHOUT a fuel filter ! After jacking up my neighbors 2004 kia rio to do a simple fuel filter change, following the same diagram as previously posted. I roll under the front of the drivers rear wheel, then behind, then in front ! Run back to my comp., scratching my head.Now roll under all 4 corners of fuel tank ! Okay maybe its tucked up out of sight. So i drop the tank, still nothing !Besides scratching my head, now i'm thinking i've bumped my head while searching for this elusive fuel filter !! sitting dumbfounded a friend walks up & my now angered nieghbor (i told m' the filter change would take 30 min to an hour tops!)My frnd now laughing googles 'the location of filter', its in the tank! so now i got the back seat out, remove the plate, pull out the pump/sending unit, still not seeing anything that looks like the part i got ! I see three tabs on this plastic coffee can size gas pouring all over me part. Like a mad man i open it. my frnd says 'see there it is' No that is just the pick up filter bag. Now my nieghbor who was seen sighting me in on his 30'06 rifle scope thinking that i'm a complete idiot !!#@ Now my frnd intrigued takes a gander under, around following every sq. in. of fuel line frm tank to inj. As word got around to my mech. inadequacy other nieghbors stopped by for a laugh a few drunk i put a wager on it. So even though i lost my ass on a simple filter chng i won a $125!! THanks kia for brainfarting (at least 2) no fuel filter kia rios!!

 

Well I guess we all stand corrected. I'll be darned no fuel filter, mustave run short at the factory and just kept the line running as best they could, what a deal. Guess I'll just walk away from this one shaking my head. Just proves we can't be right all the time.
