The 2 don't seem related but given they happened a day apart, I'm curious if there is a common root cause.
The engine won't start
We hopped in, and I did the normal press brake pedal push the start button while the lights blinked, no attempt to fire the starter happened. No error code showed on the car.
I gave it a few tries, and finally, the electronics reset, and voila, normal start. The problem has not recurred since. The worry here is we get stranded and need to call for a tow.
P0456 error
This afternoon, we hop in, and after starting, the Sorento reports a diagnostics failure and the check engine light pops on. After finding out the UVA app just says the same thing the car does -- error, please schedule service I headed over to Autozone.
Hook Autozone's tester up, and they print a report saying P0456 - evaporative emission control system link. Tighten or replace the gas cap. A quick google suggests that's just the easy fix, and there are other possible issues like a cracked charcoal canister.
We have time remaining on the 100k powertrain warranty, and I presume this will be covered by that. But of course, the pathetic Ron Tonkin dealer near us has an earliest available appointment after Thanksgiving. I hate Tonkin. The great Kia dealer (Weston) is 30 minutes away in good traffic.
Any thoughts on why the car wouldn't start and could there be any relation between the 2 problems 1 day apart?
No other problems showed up in the simple Autozone diagnostic, and my experience with Tonkin Kia is that if they can't reproduce it, it didn't happen.
