Grrrrrrrr…….!!!! I am having a ’98 Sportage and sometimes it really gets to me, have taken it to the workshop for at least 4 times last month and now the “hold” light has started flickering. What’s going wrong in it??
If the "HOLD" light is flashing then the CEL (check engine light) must be on too.
Essentially what has happen is that the TCM (Transmission Control Unit) has detected a failure in the automatic transmission systems it monitors and controls. When that happens it sets the "HOLD" light to flash and also instructs the ECM (engine computer) to turn on CEL.
99% of the time these failures are purely electrical and not related to the transmission itself. If you live in the U.S. (except California) you can go to any local Autozone and they can connect an OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port and pull the troublecodes for free. The codes will be in the format PXXXX, where XXXX will be a number. Get those codes...there will most likely be 2 of them...and we can assist you with a fix.
