Even when our models don't apply to this mess?

I am fairly certain the insurers will spread the losses out among all the insured with Kia/Hyundai owners bearing the brunt of the increases.

Well damn
My son has a 2012 Sportage and got an email advising to bring in to local dealer for software upgrade. He probably won't get around to it but maybe this information will help others.

"Help enhance the security of your Sportage by installing an important software upgrade. When installed, this important update restricts the operation of your vehicle's ignition system if your locked vehicle is subject to a theft attempt without the key.

You can take advantage of this upgrade at no additional cost, so contact your Kia dealership today to schedule an appointment right away.* Most dealerships provide online scheduling.

Sincerely,
Kia America - Customer Care Department

*This is a limited time offer. Check the date on the notification letter we sent you previously for your vehicle's specific deadline. Also, note that compatibility issues may exist for vehicles equipped with a remote start accessory. Contact your dealer for more information"

The other important fact is that many insurers are flat out denying coverage on any Kia/Hyundai vehicles regardless of the year or model, not just the ones that are on the vulnerable list (2015-2021).

I am paying higher than normal insurance rates on my 2023 Sportage solely because it is a Kia, even though it does have the immobilizer.

Yes…because the hoodlums doing this don’t really take the time to verify which models are vulnerable. They break in first, discover it’s not one of them, then move onto the next. It still results in a COMP claim.

Why? Just wondered because I was curious about Taos.
Why? Just wondered because I was curious about Taos.
Owned a Sportage for 6 months when it got totaled. None of the exact replacements available anywhere nearby, and I needed a car. Researched the Taos and found a great deal on one similarly equipped to the SX Prestige. Very nice vehicle, but a little smaller than the Sportage, and the ride was a little noisier and not as smooth. Shortly after buying the Taos, we bought my wife a Genesis GV70. A spectacular vehicle. After a couple months in her car, I realized the Sportage SX Prestige was very very much like a sibling to the GV70. I decided then to buy a Sportage exactly like my first one (Wolf Gray with Carmine Red interior) as soon as I could find one for a reasonable deal.

TL;DR: The Taos is very nice but the Sportage SX Prestige is a very near luxury vehicle.

My ins cost went down with the Sportage. Not much, but down. It replaced a top of the line Lexus RX tho. Should be cheaper, Kia was half price of the Lexus.
The price increases haven't happen to us yet.

Although, in the next renewal I'm anticipating a increase due to recent events with thief including the cat converter rings the troll and steal those regularlly.

The Sportage cat is easy to get at and a prime target for thief's who look for newer ones since they are most valuable to reclaim. Had our etched with the vin # to discourage thief but cat cages are more secure.

What providers are denying coverage? I haven't heard of one.

This is an older article but I haven't heard much since other than Hyundai setting up some deal with AAA to insure cars others will not. Don't believe I've heard anything from Kia regarding that - and of course this is also location, trim, year, vehicle-specific-equipment, insurance company dependent.

I haven't heard if the update rises to the level of restoring eligibility anywhere though and anecdotal thefts post-update haven't given me much confidence.

Hard to say since only like 2% of the effective vehicles have been updated so far and there been mixed results on the update where some still swiped even after the update.

flagged as high risk by some companies like Progressive and State Farm, won't write new policies on them. Several reports that people have brought one only to find out there existing policy won't cover them after they try to officially add them to thier policies after the fact.

The fallout will take years to remedy and risks will remain high for some time.

Wow 600 million dollar problem!

"As per the lawsuit, which was filed at the US District Court in Orange County, California in March, replacing windows and repairing steering columns after an attempt to break into a vehicle and hot-wire its ignition often costs an insurer more than $3,000.

The court case adds that if the vehicle was taken on joyrides or used to damage public property, the costs for the insurance company rise to over $10,000, while a total loss can be as much as $20,000."
I had the software update from dealership took about an hour never heard about anything from my auto insurance company they didn't ask so I didn't tell them, lol move on I say
Our rates are the same as last year. Our 2016 Sorento EX is parked in the garage until needed to go somewhere. Then the Sorento is back in the garage. It is driven about 750 miles a months go to the mall, grocery store, errands, and some short trips.
The "what if my car gets stolen" has another twist. Should your Kia get stolen and trashed, it cannot be repaired right away because there are no parts available. One local dealer has 10 stolen/trashed Kia's waiting for repair parts, and gave the next one an estimate of 10 weeks due to the parts shortage. So, you're out of a car for a couple of months in addition to cost of repair.
