Hi there
I honestly gave the search a try and looked at the first 15 threads; maybe my search was poorly worded.

This last Sunday, I pretty much spontaneously purchased a Borrego LX v6, with no extra from what I can tell. We like it; however, I learned that a v8 model exists (see spontaneous)

For $3500 more, I can swap the LX V6 for a EX v8 with 10k less miles to boot, which a many of you know, also gets me a sunroof, heated seats, better sounds system, navigation, etc.

What is the prevailing opinion(s) on the two models, esp. the engines (performance, mileage, reliability, serviceability)? We don’t' tow at this time but live in a hilly area. We are enjoying our v6 now while we await the v8 delivery. I'm not committed to the trade, so I’m asking now. The v6 carrying 500 lbs of people and with AC on, was good going up hill but not great - a bit laboring. Not like my Ford Focus :( but not close to our Altima SE v3.5L :eek:

Go for the V8

While I like my v6 ex 4x4, I wish i had gotten the v8 which comes with a 6sd transmission (v6 has a 5 sp). It seems to be a much better power to weight match. Add in all the extras you get, and that is an no brainer.

I have an EX V8 and I love it. The extra features for me make a big difference. My Dad has an EX V6. As far as power goes, the V6 is not lacking at all. I also like the 6spd compared to the 5spd. It is actually the same transmission used by BMW in some of their cars (ZF 6 Speed). The V8 is super smoother and has great acceleration. If I were you, I would definitely go for it. I think you will be quite pleased. The V8 also has a knee airbag which the V6 does not have. The towing capacity is larger #7500, and it comes standard with the 18 inch wheels. I really like the memory seating positions and Nav/Infinity sound system. There really isn't much I don't like about the Borrego. Some like to complain about the ride quality, but you get used to it. We are up to 30,000 miles without any issues at all. What area of the U.S. are you located?

I would actually argue that you should see if they'll give you a V6 4x4 instead of a V8 2WD-I wouldn't think of buying the 2WD version of a vehicle if its offered in 4WD, but that's just me-I also live in a rural, hilly, part of the Northeast, so 2WD + a good snow = we're not going anywhere. The power of the V6 is comparable to the Chevy 4.3L Vortec V6s (with slightly less displacement and more torque to boot) of the early 2000s. I had one in a Blazer and it was a great motor. The 3.8L is even better IMHO.

Thanks a bunch for the quick responses. To answer a few comments/questions. We live in Alabama. The dealer only has 2wd in inventory. Fortunately for my impulsive rear, they’ll let me trade to a v8. That sounds like a “no-brainer” for sure. Just wanted to make sure there was no overwhelming evidence of reliability issues.
We have had a 4wd before in Indiana, it was nice but we never off road and down here, snow that stays more than 24 hours is rare. I’m under the impression 2wd is a better, if not less costly, option for everyday road driving.
At close to 280hp, the v6 is no weakling, clearly, and off the line it surprised me for sure. Heck, compared to our ’99 Montero which had @200hp, it’s a screamer. But, like I said, we also have a v6 Altima (260hp?) and there is a noticeable deterioration and a slight “effort” going up big hills. Or honestly, I may just want the extra headroom “fo show” :)
My wife will be driving this and it makes me feel good to hear all the feedback and read about the safety record of Borregos

The original 5yr/60k warranty is transferrable to you, but the 10yr/100k drive train warranty is only for the first buyer. I'm assuming this is a Kia dealer in which case they could sell it to you as a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) vehicle then I beleive the 10yr drive train warranty can be transferred. There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for the V8 transmission ONLY that I had to have done on my Borrego. If I had to have paid out of my own pocket, it would have cost me $5000.00. Something to ask your dealer about. I drive an EX V8 and it's fantastic. Don't have the navi and Infinity system, but wish I did.

DEFINITELY go with the EX V8. We have one and it is an incredible vehicle. People in their big Ford and Chevy V8s are shocked when they are beat by a Kia. The car has tremendous power and plenty of amenities. It's a definite good trade.

Replacing the stock hankooks with michelin latitude tours took care of any harsh riding issues I had with the borrego.

Go for it you won't be sorry. We have a EX V-8 and I enjoy the extra power during occasional "spirited driving" fits that my right foot has. With the cruise control on and driving the Pa. turnpike northeast extension you don't even notice the hills, it's smooth.

thanks to all for making the seemingly obvious decision that much more so.

As it turns out, I am the beneficiary of rather lax recording by the dealership "car options recorder", as this turns out to be a fully loaded "Limited" trim line, not just an EX with a V8. Kelly Blue Book has me paying considerably more (6 - $9k) for a 17k mile Limited than a 27k mile LX version.. So yeah, I'm feeling alright with the swap +$3500 to say the least. As a bonus the in service date was Aug of 2010, so we are just 19 months into the 5 yr/60k basic waranty

My wife cried so that is cool. A good cry. It was a surprise for her.


While it's not "trigger happy with acceleration at the tap of the gas", its more "OH? You sure, you really want me to show you what I got... ok..hold on..." .. Whoa %#&@ ! And we just went from 35 to 90 stat, and no one in the vehicle took notice.
Smooth.

And all this talk about rough ride. Nah. At least not on these 18s.

One thing, oddly disappointing at least for now (maybe an solution exists?), the Infinity Audio is mediocre, with way too much coming thru the Center Channel. Meh, My wife won't mind. We both liked the LX system better initally.

I will need to go to Kia dealership to get the IPOD to be recognixed, firmware they say. Otherwise its all working great.

Nice job! I think you will really like all of the extra goodies. Is is black? I think all limited models are black without running boards. Right? And I think the limited gives you smart key and heated rear seats too. You got a great deal. Enjoy it. Post a pic if you get a chance.

It is black without running boards, yep. FWIW, the LX I was looking at was also black w/o running boards. But I see that you are saying all Limited are black, not that all black Borrego's are Limited's.
The LX had less chrome though, and 17" non-alloy wheels. There LX door handles are black, EX (Limited) are silver
It does have a smart key but I had not noticed heated rear seats yet; however, it might. We need to make our way through it in detail with the owners manual. Heated outside mirrors :unsure:

The wife is definitely enjoying the Borrego, and so do I when I get to drive it. She has gotten several compliments from co-workers.

We've gone over it and discovered two items that are not working prpoerly.

1. The AC Adapter located under the radio. In fact, it fried two of her chargers, just plugging them in

2. Oddly, the Rear A/C system is quirky. The Heat lever actually controls the fan speed, albeit only downward. The fan speed control works fine, it appears

Between CarMax and Kia these will both be coverd. Strange CarMax did not uncover and fix these, imo.
