at what point do you know when you have to much boost. If you have the right amount of fuel( using a a/f gauge and a ecm) and the temps are right. how do you know how much boost a stock sportage or any motor for that fact can take. I know if it knocks thats bad and the high engine temps but at what point before you blow the head. i will have a sportage and the plan is to start at 7psi then move to 9psi. but how high can I go. I know i cant go to the 20;s but could i get to the mid teens? any info would be great

If you don't know whats safe, you shouldn't be doing it.

Hmm, the problem is that you have several components in your engine that are only built to handle so much. So not only will you blow your head, but you also have piston rods that will bend and bearings and so much more that are all vulnerable to overpower. That is why you see heavily boosted engines are a complete build up from a blueprinted block. Then your transmission will only be able to handle so much. So I would stay low on boost till you have a powertrain that can handle all of it.

What he said.

If you're not sure, leave it alone. You can always wind up the boost and see what happens. I guess when you hear a bad popping sound and plumes of smoke come from the exhaust...You may have too much boost then haha

Trial and error sometimes is the only way to go.

Cheers, Mick

you'd be stupid to "guess" at what PSI to run, 7psi is typically the norm for at added turbo to a stock motor. if you want to go higher then that....PLEASE get it professionally tuned and dynoed to mantain proper safety, and longetivity of the motor.

I read u can go to 20 ponds safely and you should get 10 sec quarter mile with that boost. My friend is running 12 rite now and it runs good. Dont use blow off valve or wastgate just drill a hole in the exoust where it runs to the turbo to control the boost amont.
Your killing me man! Oh, man, you must be slow at work and are trolling around, cause your posts are killer! Please keep em comming.

To the OP: In a super small nutshell, if your using a wieband and ECU loggin software, you should be looking for to lean of an a/f mixture, there are alot of things to consider and each engine will veary. Exahust temps are also a way to tell, but your a/f is the easiest way to see when your about to explode something. Rich is safe, lean is power and milage, to an extent, but will cause melting and breaking of parts. What ECU piggyback system are you runing? Or a stand alone?

With this post you should clearly not be working on cars, and in no way be giving any advice about cars!
I'm running 8PSI and would NEVER even think about taking off my blow off valve. A blow off valve bleeds off boost presure when you let off the throttle. How in the world does psi relate into 1/4 times???? It does not at all. I've got a 310HP 302 and with the supercharger (procharger) went to 520HP at the crank. With a little 4 cyl you would be at around 125HP stock and maybe 255/250 with 8PSI. NO WHERE near 10 sec 1/4 miles times. Not all engine's are created equal.

You wach too much fastnfurios movies. Blowoff valve is bad for turbo. peopl just like it cuz it makes noize even tho wastgate is better. Port turbo tune is way best cuz no spring fails. blowoff valve spring fails and then engin blows. port tune it is calebrated to the turbo boost level. but keep listenin to the guys at the speed shop and movies. btw i said 20 boost pressure.
Movies....wow. I'm 45, and have been earning a living working in the car biz for over 27 years now. Also owning and working on a few diff hot rod's over the years. Do you even own a car with a forced induction? Do you know what a dyno is? If so, had your car on it? If so, do you even break 200WHP?? You should try spell check it is your friend!! 20 boost pressure???? Are you trying to say 20 pounds of boost????

I'm with Cobra259... You can't make a small engine run reliably with 20 PSI (if at all).
The the crank/bearings/head gaskets/clutch/tramsmission gears were not built to take the abuse and WILL fail when put through this kind of abuse...
You should watch Mythbusters. They'll clear your head of such "movie myths" written by someone with no knowledge of reality.
I'm amazed at the "tricks" that people try to get "unbelievable" horsepower (or mileage) out of their cars... They end up wasting their money or damaging their car and THEN bad mouth the manufactor for "making junk"...

You don't haul 2 tons of gravel in a Camero and you don't take curves at high speeds with a MAC dump truck... They both have their strong points and are made that way.

These turbo-booster kiddies sound just like the over-clocker nerds that lurk on computer sites.

Obviously, the standard turbo settings are designed to produce a healthy performance without busting anything; the main aim seems to be improving the torque rather than frantic bursts of high power.

If the OP is serious, the answer would be to wind it up until it busts, then try it a little lower with your next engine. Money is no object when you're after speed.

I know you like to talk like most people dont know what they are saying, so on that note I want to add:

BLOW OFF VALVES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE AMOUNT OF BOOST YOUR TURBO MAKES!

Not sure if you guys are honestly falling for the troll bait, or you have surplus stock of troll biscuits.
