Transmission failed - DCT failures/ manufactured date - SA502A ECU update

I have a 2021 Sorento SX. I was wondering if anyone is having any transmission issues? My car has currently been sitting at the dealership for 60+ days awaiting a new transmission. Transmission failed at 3,200k miles. If so, has anyone had luck receiving a transmission?

Did you ever get it back? Ours went in on 12/21. Still no eta.
Car still at the dealership shop with no ETA as of 3/26/23. It's just sitting in the parking lot behind the shop. Just got an email Friday from Kia corporate saying there is no ETA. Car has been there since 1/3/23. This is madness. Still have to make car payments and no loaner vehicle.

I will pass along my Sorento transmission story. 2021 Sorento SX with DCT and 32,000 miles. Reverse was failing. The symptoms was jerkiness when moving in reverse. All forward gears were fine. I took it in to have it checked and they came back saying Kia wanted to replace it. They instantly gave me a free car rental from Hertz. It took about 12 days to get a transmission and replace it. Kia and the dealership took care of me.

Just got the SC250 DCT Oil Pump SA502A DCT Software Logic update on Thursday. My build date was 7/22 and even though I didn't notice any issues before, I immediately noticed a difference with the shifts after the update. It's much smoother.

Congratulations on what seems to be a text book repair. My neighbor & I each purchased 2021 Sorentos back in the Spring of 2021. So he took his car (has 23,000 miles) to the dealership a few weeks ago for trans recall & within 50 miles the new trans oil pump & software upgrade failed & car was stuck in neutral. Got it towed back to the dealership, they gave him a free loaner & it’s now 12 days later & it could be another week before the replacement trans will be at the dealership. My car has 20,000 miles with never a trans problem but I have to go out of town & put abut 2,500 miles on the car. Do I try to squeeze in the trans recall appointment before I go away or after I come back ? It’s like driving a ticking time bomb.

Not a DCT failure but a standard AT failure. My 2021 Sorento S Trim is currently in the dealership after driving one day and all of a sudden the dashboard starts blinking all warning lights and car drops into 2nd or 3rd gear and wouldn't shift out of it. First they diagnosed it as a faulty inhibitor switch, replaced it, but apparently problems are still present. So now they're waiting on direction from Kia if they should just replace the whole trans. Car's been there since 4/17, and still no firm update on what direction they're going. Car has about 15k miles on it. Currently gave me a 23' Soul GT-Line loaner. Just wanted to share.

so a little update on my previous post.

Car has been in the dealership for a little over 3 weeks now just sitting there. I get weekly updates from the service advisor saying that "they have not been given direction yet from Kia Tech Services on if they're just going to replace the whole transmission". At this point my patience is getting thin with Kia and was wondering if anyone tried escalating their similar issue with Kia Customer Service to any luck? Any other advice would be appreciated.

Mine’s been at the dealer for 6 1/2 weeks. 2 new transmissions fitted, still not working. Hopeless communication from them, I’ve rung dozens of times, left voice messages. Finally contacted the general manager and told him I want to know what’s happening. I get a call back on Thursday saying they’re waiting on a tech from Kia to advise, as it could just be a computer problem. They’d call me back Friday. Here we are Wednesday and no word from them, AGAIN! Mine started off with the P1C2D03 code and when I checked the app recently it’d changed to P193B79. This is getting beyond a joke. My case was passed to an escalation case manager at Kia corporate, and I’ve heard absolutely nothing from them either. We’re paying for a rental, which Kia have said they’ll reimburse.

your experience with the dealership and Kia sounds very similar to mine. Dealership telling me they're waiting for Kia Tech Services to advise. Telling me they'd call me back on X date to update me but never call me on X date. Well i called customer service yesterday and was so desperate to talk to a representative that i was on hold for almost 2 hours! After finally speaking to a rep, they informed me that they sent an update to my dealer on 5/1. My service advisor never called me to update me so i called on 5/4 to follow up. He said they still haven't heard anything. The customer service rep mentioned that there was a system outage that may cause delays on the dealership receiving the update. Don't know what that's supposed to mean but this is getting ridiculous. They also told me that the issue with the car could just be a computer problem. Something about the control module. It's frustrating to see that there are many people on this thread that have similar experiences.

Finally got to bringing my Sorento in to the dealership as per the recall and performed the update (invoice stated: "221A26 - [Recall] 21-23MY MQ4a_DL3a Theta 8DCT logic improvement + TM R/R")

After driving away from the lot, I noticed it's much smooth when approaching a red light and when inching forward. It doesn't want to stutter/pounce forward...as much. However, I noticed 2 things:
  • 2 times, it stuttered pretty violently when changing gears and I don't know how to reproduce but will keep an eye on it
  • The pouncing/lunging forward when approaching a red light can still occur but happens when the car wants to shut off when stopped

Thanks for sharing your story & pointing out that yours is an S model with standard torque converter AT, but this thread is specifically regarding the DCT. Maybe you could start a new thread regarding your specific issue? There's enough misinformation with people jumping to the faulty assumption that the DCT has had a large percentage of failures. I don't think this is the case, compared to total vehicle production.

I hope yours gets repaired properly and soon! There are some bad dealers out there for sure....representing all manufacturers.
Now former 2021 X Line owner. Purchased in early spring of 2021. Have had the fuel leak recall, have experienced the sporadic/intrusive traction control. Now finally transmission issues post-recall CPU update being done in Nov of last year. Before the recall, it was rough at times. Immediately after, it was much smoother. But I began to experience a “clunk” when going from reverse to drive after a month or so. That clunk lasted for a couple months then went away. Experienced occasional problems when starting up and going into drive where it seemed like the vehicle was not in gear at all. Then I noticed “grinding” the other day when reversing in my alleyway back to drive way. Finally, I began to have some whining/whirring noise on deceleration (with no brake applied). Took a short highway trip and had a noise at about 75 mph. I thought it was tire noise or maybe a wheel bearing. Took into local tire shop. They found no tread problems other than normal wear (and still have treadlife remaining)and checked wheel bearings. All good. They drove and replicated noise but said they could put vehicle into neutral and noise went away. They thought something in the drivetrain or transmission And recommended I go see dealer. with the clunking, the “not in gear on startup issues”, the grinding in reverse, and now this new potential issue, I traded this weekend. Got offer over pay off and got out. Just is not worth it. My dealer service is hit or miss in quality. Have a lot of upcoming travel and I don’t need this hassle.

I’ll miss some aspects of it, but not sure if I will trust Kia again. I have one other Kia and while it has been generally reliable, I am experiencing A/C issues at 80000 miles in it. I definitely won’t trust a DCT.
