Towing 5000 lbs with the Sorento - Myths and facts

I drive in comfort mode all the time...Towing or not....Just make sure you have the latest Transmission software update from the dealer..Before the uprade the shifting was a bit eratic while towing...The update fixed that problem. Now the car shifts very smoothly while towing or not...I was unaware of the update existed..After complaining about the problem they did some reasearch and found there was an update software to the modualator Valve on the Transmission...
Hi there, just wanted to confirm a few things: 1. you had erratic shifting only while towing but without towing everything was ok? 2. that there is a Transmission software update for 2019? The reason I'm asking that I have towed a trailer (not too heavy, up to 2500lbs ) and I haven't noticed anything... So, just wondering if it worth of updating Transmission software..., just in case? Looks like I have the some model 2019 LX V6.

Erratic shifting was a problem i found on the kia forum for the sorento..In my case not towing mode the transmission gear shifting was rough but not all the time just once in a while we are 2 drivers for this car which drive. In towing mode the transmission was shifting a lot worse..It had problems to upshift causing higher rpms especially going up a hill.Thats why i switched to manual shift which solved the shifting problem while towing. The dealer explained the reason was the kia has a smart transmission which means its able to learn the way you drive in the different modes..Eco,,smart,,comfort,,sport..and the transmission adjusts the shifting accordingly. Since we are 2 drivers the transmission is confused therefore the erratic shifting. Towing made the problem even worse. The modulator valve controls the shifting so the new software upgrade changes the smart transmission parameters to compensate for multi drivers and towing.I would recommend you get that software upgrade if its available for your kia according to the cars vin number. Hope this info helps...W.N
Wow, this very interesting and thank you for explaining this it was quite helpful...so, theoretically if I'm only driver it shouldn't be a problem (looks like)... but regardless, I will talk to the dealership if transmission software upgrade is available... Thanks again.

Good that you have 500 tongue weight capacity. Some Sorentos are only 350. Also Kia Canada said can't use WD hitch but perhaps that's because of the 350lb limit. It's a real mixed bag with Sorento and towing. I notice their new ads only show small trailers. Safe travels.
Actually KIA Canada said, you can use WD hitch... If you read previous comments there is an email attached from KIA CA.

Thanks for sharing. I received the opposite from Kia. However, with a WD or not the tongue weight should not exceed 350 lbs which is almost impossible unless it is a very small trailer. Anyway, happy travels.
Interesting... Looks like KIA CA has no clue... which is sad actually...
I've used WD hitch on a few occasions and it did help a lot with sagging... with hitch weight around 330-350 the sagging was 2+ inches... with WD hitch no more than 1 inch.

I've been using Curt Echo (wireless) for 2 years and really like it. All you need is just additional 12V wire which requires no drilling... so I'm quite happy with this controller type. As for WD vs. Air bags my vote is for WD. Air bags doesn't fix the problem, only visual part. In contrast WD fix the sag by re-distributing weight which is real solution. But it's just my personal opinion.

8 seep does work when towing but I guess it would depend on towing weight. I personally have very light trailer (tent trailer), gross weight is around 2000 lbs. And on a flat terrain it easily stays on 8 speed (no problem at all). My normal towing speed in a range between 100 - 105 km/h (due to trailer limitation). Fuel consumption no more than 12 L, usually between 10.5 -11.5 L. In a city I prefer to switch to Sport mode to have more power but on a highway I have never noticed any difference between ECO/Comfort/Sport modes.
I have to also agree that software for 8 speed is not refined... I've seen a lot of odd behaviours during towing... needles to say "hesitation" drives me nuts... that is why in a city I always turn to Sport mode to compensate it.

When I tow my trailer which is pretty flat with a SxS Atv on it I am likely the same weight. But on non 400 series road so I am not more than 90km/hr with some grades involved. Computer can go to 15km/L for 40km one way tow and reverse of that back home.
I noticed that too. If I go uphill fuel consumption can go over 20, but normally I'm not slowing down... :) The fuel consumption I mentioned is average for one the trip (300-350 km).
