My car's top speed seems to go right up to 118 and stop there, even if I'm going down hill. Has anyone reflashed their ECU to get rid of the limit? Anyone doing any tuning at all?

I got this app called 'Witness' on my phone and it makes a pretty good dashcam for 99cents. It also uses the GPS in the phone to display location and speed. Here's a video, best to view in full screen to see all the info displayed.

That's damned near 200 kph... o_O unless you are a human organ transplant driver, I don't see why anyone needs to go that fast :O

Most cars do have cut-outs and speed limiters. Speed limiters are usually set within 10% of its max speed. Other limiters are rev limiters, just about every car has this to stop redlining. The programming will not let you reach max rpm in its final drive.

Speed runs also show up in your cars history too. Its something that can be read from the ECU. It records rpm, speed and temps and is often used for investigations (insurance, police and car manufacturers).

I don't think that the Rio is speed-limited; it seems to be doing about 112 MPH (180 km/h) on the flat which is about what you'd expect from a modern small car. OK, so it will do a little bit more down a hill; that's normal too. Find a big enough hill and eventually you'll run into the rev limiter.

Finding the absolute maximum speed that a car will do is a specialist (and dangerous) occupation. You have to fiddle with final drive ratio, tyre inflation etc. and get the environment just right (temperature, wind etc.). Totally pointless for ordinary driving.

Maybe we should discourage "speed runs" on this forum. Plenty of YouTube crazies if you want to go down that path.

I agree with Vagabond. Maybe it's my age talking but why the hell would you need to go that fast, let alone faster?? All it takes is someone who misjudges your speed and changes lanes leaving you not enough time to react. It's a dumbass move.

Aegisranger, So let's see you cruise @ 118mph down a public road (Instant Crowbar Hotel Where I live) listening to Spirit & probably scaring the sh-t out of everyone you passed . You should go to Europe where I've done 210 KPH Legally In A Peugeot Diesel:). & your point was...

That's all a bit garbled. Nissan that I had was red-lined at 7500 RPM, but was speed limited at 250 km/h. It wasn't a coincidence that 250 km/h in 5th gear was 7000 RPM (Max Power). 6th was a rather taller gear that probably would have struggled to get to 230 km/h, which is far adrift of its theoretical gearing maximum of 330 km/h.

With appropriate gearing and no rev limiter, the Nissan probably would have made it to about 275 km/h, but given that 250 km/h is a common limit, Nissan adjusted the gearing to suit.

And, like Larry Hagman said in reference to Barbara Eden: "No, I never did".

OK, so I wanted to see how fast my slowest vehicle is... I wouldn't expect canadians to understand that anyway.

To those who actually answered my question, thanks. My ZX14 is speed limited by the ECU at 185 mph. From being stopped I can accelerate to 185 in less than a mile, and then the ECU cuts fuel so I can't exceed the max programmed speed. There are people who can reflash the ECU and remove that limit and it will go mid to upper 190's, or over 200 with other mods. Doing those mods without the ECU reflash will boost horsepower and make the bike quicker, but still limited to 185 top speed by the ECU.

So is the Rio limited by horsepower or by ECU? That is my question.

I totally understand. Don't know why you think Canadians are somehow different. However public roads are NOT the place to satisfy your curiosity.

Wondering what is the limiting factor in the car is a legitimate question. Posting a video of yourself passing cars while doing almost double the speed limit though is a different matter. Here people have been arrested after posting such videos.

While it is true that the ECU can see this information it can't be saved without ODB based reader. There shouldn't be any trip information saved on the ECU other than your odometer mileage and any uncleared engine codes. They might be able to tell that the governor been tripped but that is it. You can always clear your own engine codes but the ECU keeps track of miles since the codes were last cleared.

Why is that?
25 years ago my friends and I made a motorcycle trip from Toronto to Vancouver, then back through the northern US. The difference in driving in the US and Canada was noticable in that the Canadian drivers tended to be the 'prim, proper, and polite' types, while Americans are more aggressive. That may not be true today, but it was my observation at the time. I lived in England for 3 years, traveled all over Europe, and worked in East Africa for a year, so I've seen all kinds of driving. Canadians just seemed to have a calmer spirit and less forgiving police :)

Glad I wasn't there, wouldn't want the RCMP knocking on my door.

I thought that I had answered that early on:

Did you mean 185 MPH on the bike? That's mighty fast. Things like tyre have maximum speed ratings, even if your abilities are unlimited.

thats rubbish. Data stored on the ECU recording maximum RPM and such is notoriously unreliable, particularly if faults are detected. I have seen ECU stored values with things like maximum speed approaching the speed of light, and over 100,000rpm max revolutions. Its certainly not passable as a point of evidence.

Here are my thoughts on the top speeds I have observed. 118 MPH (200 km/h) seems to be the number Kia likes to set their limiter. Both my Sedonas and Optima cut out at 118. Never had a chance to do a speed run in Rondo or Amanti, but I would be disappointed if the Amanti cut out there. I would be surprised if the Rondo could even do it. The Amanti has so much power on tap...and when the limiter cuts out the Sedonas at 118 the engine feels like it has quite a bit more left - with less wind resistance, same motor and 1000 less pounds the Amanti should really fly. The 4 cylinder in the Optima was more than happy to give up at 118, and it felt like it took about 2 minutes to get there from 100....although there was a strong headwind. How long did it take to get the Rio up to 118? It takes about 35 seconds in the Sedona from 0 to limiter.

Ive the hit 120 mph mark on my car but only in sports mode while in 5th gear but it doesnt seem to be a limiter it seems as though the car is tuned to not really go higher then that ive also driven that fast on a open straight in the middle of the night for about 45 seconds straight it wont go much faster cause it simply wasnt build for anything higher it does say 140 mph on the dash but it is limited by either a tune or the governor somehow. maybe if you got it tuned and also got the limiter removed you could achieve a higher top speed even though it would be pointless because youll never have a reason to go that fast or the torque to move that car fast enough down a track lol js

-And I can't imagine that the inhabitants would really want to stray too far or too fast from that particular location. ^_^
