Mine went a few weeks ago- I got lucky no damage. New timming belt shhe was ready to go. High speed break even. I was so sure that it damaged the head that I bought a rebuilt. Email me if you need one. try Partsdinosaur for a belt and or a gasket.
No on the 2000 Sportage when the timing belt goes IT DOES NOT DAMAGE THE ENGINE you are safe with just having the belt and tensioner and bearing replaced.
Mine just went this weekend too. Weird.
They told me their computer was saying it was an interference motor. I was 99% sure it wasnt from what i read here and on 4x4.
Just needed a new water pump and belt, no actual damage.
