Ok asking for forum opinions here..taking my 03 sorie in for the timing belt change...has 82K on it....recommended replacement is 60K....quoted price parts and labor about $400....should I replace the water pump as well..would be strictly preventive maintenance..no indication of any problems...but since it will be accessible with the timing belt change....was wondering if it would be worth it..comments appreciated

thanks

If you can afford the extra cost and your planing on keeping the Sorento for many more miles. Then anything replaced while it's open for timing belt would be money well spent. Has there been any problems with the Sorento in the past?
none in the past other that a sticking rear hatch...will was taken care of....82K on the car...and doing well...first time back in a KIA dealer for scheduled maintenance..other that oil changes and tires..which were done elsewhere..long story..just got it back...so now doing all the maintenance..just had all the fluids replaced..diff, trans, coolant etc..and plugs....so this is the last major service for a while.....

Glad to hear this

We don't drive the Sorento as much as others just 6K on our 03 Sorento have two others also a Car and truck. No problems so far and I change my own oil and filter use Mobil 1 10/30 and Kia OEM Filters. Also do my own greasing. Was glad to hear your timing belt has gone well past the 60K I always thought this 60K deal was a BIG scam to make the dealers some easy money at the expence of the owners. Let us know what you decide and how the work is done. Good Luck.

If you're driving one of KIA's "interference" engines and don't have the $$$ laying around to have a new engine installed, then for the love of God spend the $400-600 bucks and get the belt changed!

There are NUMEROUS examples of people on various auto forums that had a belt go at just over 60k miles and trash their motor. Then when KIA doesn't honor the 100k drivetrain warranty, they come online and cry.

I agree that 60k is a low number of miles to have to change a belt, having had a V6 Plymouth Acclaim go 120k without breaking before I changed it.

But... that wasn't an interference designed engine, so I felt the I could take the risk.

Don't be Penny-wise and Pound-foolish folks. When KIA says change the belt at 60k (and that's the NORMAL service interval -- the severe service interval is 40k!!!), just DO IT!

Otherwise you're going to have a 2 ton paperweight on your hands, and be running on here to cry in your beer for support and comfort.

DITTOS for the engine coolant and transmission fluids too! If you don't perform these required services/fluid changes at the KIA prescribed interval (and by a KIA dealer just to be safe!), you risk KIA nixing the warranty should your engine blow or you have a transmission problem. The severe service interval for these is 30k miles! Most of the U.S. falls within the severe service area too, btw! I've read postings online where warranties were voided if these fluids weren't changed, and a problem occurred only a few thousand miles past the deadline.

You've been warned.

well this sorie was out of my hands for the three years it was away....long story..and no scheduled maintenance was done other than oil and tires.....so it can be a proven engine and drive train....despite it not being done......scheduled maintenance is a personal choice..and sometimes an expensive one.....Im amazed at how maintenance intensive the KIA really is..with most US car manufacturers having a major maintenance done at 100K.....

only other service the dealer recommended..after doing the safety check this morning was to flush the brake fluid and system...as it was cloudy instead of clear....I also had them turn the front rotors.....to eliminate the infamous pulse......$100 to flush the brake system and $70 to turn the rotors...in addition to $450 to replace the timing belt....not too bad......considering this is the first major service at the dealership the sorie has ever had......

plugs replace, trans, dif, coolant flush done elsewhere....last month...

So what about the water pump?
I opted not to do it.......so we will see......part was 195 and another 100 to install......that was pushing 1000 total for the bill..and its too close to XMAS...$600 was my limit for this one..and still broke it a little bit....should be done by 4PM today per my service manager

Ok so the update.....timing belt (425)...flushed the brake lines (100)....tech said the fluid was slightly cloudy....and turned the front rotors (75)......total out the door was $600..spoke with the service manage while I was there.....(always nice to strike up a friendly conversation), stated this was a vehicle that was given back to me..and I was catching up on all the scheduled maintenance...would I have a problem maintaining the warranty should something happen....it told me as long as the services were done..and they (dealership) had them documented in the system..or I could show receipts for the work......they had no problems honoring future warranty work...I specifically asked..well I was 20K miles past a timing belt change.....his response was......it didnt break before...you conducted the preventative maintenance and replaced it......all is good to go...

dealership did a 16 point safety and mech inspection.....certified all was good...and now all maintenance is current per their records.....so......18K left on the drivetrain warranty now.......

pulse in the front when braking now gone...braking more crisp and solid
engine runs and sounds good
one day turn around.....nice dealer service

Hows the Sorie running?
I have an 03 Ex too. It has 53K on it. I just had the Timing belt changed. They told me not to bother having the water pump replaced.
I am still 2nd guessing if i should have had it replaced. 53K miles seems a bit early for the water pump to fail. I'll def. replace @ 80K when next timing belt change comes up.
I had asked Kia serv. dept since i was past sched maint on timing belt and just about every other thing (trans change was done) would my warranty be voided. She said more than likely yes.
The 2 autos I have now have taught me a lesson. I always had 5-8 year old cars. That with a new car comes very pricey maint. if you want to keep warranty up to date.
Just curious how your truck is running. Like I said we have 53K and not a single problem from her. I still love this truck, even though the gas mileage is horrible!
Take care

kia water pumps

I bought a 2001 optima at an auction with 89K on it. Was going to replace the timing belt, but drove 10 miles on it first, and the belt broke.

Fortunately, didn't wreck the engine. (Sometimes you get lucky!)

They didn't replace the water pump and I questioned it at the time. They said didn't need to.

Now the car has 140K on it, and the water pump is working fine. However I will be replacing pump, both belts and all three tensioner/pulleys in the next couple of weeks.

An ounce of prevention....

Some maint. intervals vary between territories. Go with what your manual says. (eg UK oil change is 10k miles and no insistence on "severe" service by dealers - the ones I use anyway.)

sorie running fine....almost 90K on it now.....my kia dealer service writer was more understanding..in fact their recommended maintenance isnt as harsh as the severe driving category.....I guestion that most of the US falls in that category anyway as has been mentioned...my service writer..stated our area in northern va..didnt fall in that category....thus their maintenance is different for most of the fluid changes.....the timing belt is still the same....
