I had the "diesel" sound in my engine (Borrego 4.6 Tau V8) and service manager sent a video of it to Kia. Kia told them to strip down the engine and find the problem. After 3 weeks of inspecting every single part, the pistons were found to be out of round. Apparently there is a teflon coating on the pistons that wore off and "ovalled"(not a word but you get the point). So Kia Korea is having to make new pistons and ship them over since replacements are not stocked yet. Hopefully the same thing doesn't happen again? Maybe there was a bad batch? Otherwise the engine is wonderful. Kia seemed to be a victim of bad timing bringing this out a few years too late....
Apparently they have also had 3 others they have replaced because of this all at varying amounts of distances driven on the engine. While not enough cases for a recall yet, it may be something for them to look at if you have that engine. It may spawn a recall and possibly making better pistons for them.

Has anyone else had this sound or problem?

Slightly amusing that a worn-out engine is described as sounding like a diesel.

The engine can't be more than 2 or 3 years old. Teflon? Sounds unlikely.
