Well...after going to the dealer , learning a 12 day waiting time for a time slot, and that it would cost more on warranty than doing the job myself....so I went to RockAuto and ordered the 2 VVT solenoids which arrived well before my appointment..cancelled...and did it. I did not try to search which of the solenoids was at fault, though I suspected the intake one, so got both changed quite easily. Having a 4 banger gives a lot of room on the rear side. The only concern when reassembling was not to drop the retaining bolt (one on each side) down in the frame or the outside bottoms of the block...
THen a 10 minute test drive did not show any symptom of the former problem.
EDIT: and went to the cottage this afternoon on a 50km return trip....all is OK.

Sounds like similar encounter with my daughter's 09 Spectra 2.0 when we first got it. cleaned the VVT solenoid and separate filter screen located in the heads oil gallery on the short end of the head...no problems since and over 3 years.
Glad you got it taken care of!:)
