Hey Tony,
If you're in Canberra, I'm assuming that's here in Oz. Your car should have a 7 year warranty (sorry US citizens that's right, 7 years) so I don't think they can refuse you, try another stealership.
For information on removing the centre console, I just did that recently and it is only held in by clips. I pulled up carefully on the drivers side rear edge and the unit just came up (with a typical bang noise). You need to have the shift lever (automatic) not in park to get the unit up high enough to look underneath. LOTS of wires in 2 connectors. Getting the console completely off, I think you will need to remove the shift lever (sorry didn't go that far). Good Luck from Gold Coast

Hey Tony, I tried a reply but it got lost. With my luck it will show up after I post this reply.
Primarily, I assume you are in Canberra, Australia. If so you must have a 7 year warranty. I'd go to a different dealership. This is definitely a warranty problem.
Secondarily, the centre console where the switches are located is separate from the storage box. There is no need to unscrew anything. To lift the console (switches only area) just pull up. I started the pull up on the close right corner. You can't lift it too high because it gets stuck with the auto gear lever. Select neutral (engine must be on to move the lever) and you can at least see underneath (I used a mirror). There is enough room to check out the huge amount of wires located in only 2 connectors which are easily disconnected, but I think that the transmission selector must be taken off to get the console off. Good Luck. Dave
