The 'lil ol lady started idilng rough this morning and having no power on acceleration. Occasionally surged. This afternoon I cleaned the plugs; lots of grey sooty stuff caked on. The book said to gap them at .039-.043, which is much less than they were gapped at. I dutifully followed the book but the Check Engine light is now flashing.

After she cools, or in the AM, I'll gap them back out but it'll be a guess. The old girl has ~150K on her and burns a bit of oil. Suggestions on gap? I'll also change the fuel filter as I already have one. Air filter looks good. Any suggestions welcome.

Well the classical treatment for plugs that foul due to burning oil is to go to a slightly hotter plug ...be carefull you dont want pre igniton. You should of course change to a 20/50 oil and not the supermarket craap ...engine could do with a de coke by the sound of it

The gap is in the correct range [1.05mm] approx .040 in. If the car is burning oil then as pistnbroke has suggested try moving up the heatrange to a hotter plug[ 1 or 2 numbers] it will keep the plugs burning cleaner and go to a heavier weight oil. Unfortunately eventually you will have to bight the bullet and give the engine a rebuild.

pistnbroke, what's a de coke? Far as I'm concerned, if the old gal can last another 10 years I'll do my best. Just trying to afford the stuff I can't do myself, and learn to do the things I can.

She's about due for an oil change anyway, so I'll move to 20W50 and see if that helps. I've been putting some thickner stuff in with the 10W30. One mechanic suggested I add transmission fluid as well, to stop some issues.

A decoke used to be quite a regular thing to have to do in years gone by on all cars[ because of better engine tech, fuels and oils now it isn't done much], it is opening up the engine and removing any buildup of carbon [ coke ] on the pistons and head. I think maybe the mechanic that suggested the ATF might be thinking along the lines of softening any buidup and carrying it away, but it would produce some extra smoke.

I suggest doing a forum search, and you'll find a few reports of misfiring with the plugs set at what can be found in some documentation i.e. 0.040"

There seems to be consensus that the smaller gap of around 0.028 ~ 0.030" may be better and in some cases get rid of a misfire problem.
No harm in trying the smaller plug gap if experiencing misfire problems.

With 150k miles on it you might have a catalytic converter that is plugged up causing restriction in exhaust gas. I've read about a few KIAs that acted just as you described.
It seems to come on very quickly. If by disconnecting the exhaust before the cat the car runs good (but noisy) you've found your problem.
Just one more thought to try.

In this case the problem came on quickly. I've cleaned the plugs and gotten the one bad misfire taken care of but I think that's only a band aid. I need to take care of the fuel filter, since I already have one, and try some different gaps in the plugs until she runs well. That's tomorrow's work. Then heavier oil and hotter plugs if things still aren't taken care of, or in the near future even if they are. Air filter is good.

Years ago, before Cats, I would have my partner run a car up on the dyno, 60 MPH, put a load on it and then cI would carefuly pour ATF into the carburetor. The carbon would fly out of the engine. It would alternate from brown smoke to white. After that I would squirt some H2O in and more would come out. For sticking valves I would recommend a qt of ATF in the gas tank. That was then. If you put anything into the intake of a modern engine or gas tank be sure its compatable with the 02 sensors and Cat.

Still having the issue. The local AutoZone folks did th eOBD thing on it and it reported Cylinder 3 mis-firing. So I swapped plugs between #2 and #3, pulled th enegative ground off for a moment to reset things, and it still shows cylinder 3 misfiring.

She only has trouble getting up to speed, and will surge occasionally. Haven't been able to find th efuel filter or identify the catalytic converter. At this point it seems to be time to take her into the shop and let a real mechanic look at her.

Delayed follow-up. Life got overly busy overly quick. Took it to a mechanic and the said there was arcing in the wires. They've replaced the plugs and wires, but I'm out of town and can't report back. I did ask for slightly hotter plugs per the forum's recommendation.

I had that same problem myself a couple of years ago on cylinder 1 I think it was. New wires fixed it right up.

I also had the same problem with Lean. The mechanics told me that the spark plugs were damaged due to exposure to high-voltage electricity.
Doesn't Cyl 1+3 have a coil on it? I can't quite remember its 1 & 3 or 2 & 4. Been a while since I seen a sephias motor.
A misfire will happen if a plug/coil/wire is bad. Its gotta be 1 of the 3.
