Unfortunately my Sorento had to be towed to my local Kia dealer due to faulty speedometer, the recovery truck driver stated that he heard that the diesel engine in the sorento (2.5l 16v) was made by Mercedes Benz? Can anyone verify this fact or is he misinformed and the engine is made by Kia themselves?

The old unit is the 2.9L, the Sorento’s 2.5L is a new design shared with Hyundai.

I am not sure regarding the source of it, maybe Murphwiz can help.

Kia (or hyundai) make all thier own engines, the 2.9 in the sedona is reputed to be based around a Mercedes Diesel engine, but I have not found any evidence of that, and I've seen every casting stamp there is on the damn thing!
The 2.5 CRDi is a Hyundai/Kia designed and built unit. This so far, has proved to be ultimately reliable, seen a few cars with quite high mileages, and they just seem to get better, smoother and more gusty with miles B)
