Sputters if I push pedal too much flashing cel flashing no shift in gears

What I see know is it idles good but when I put it into drive it sputters if I push hard on the pedal there is some misfiring then it goes away. I accelerate but it doesn't shift gears. If I put the shifter into 1st then switch to 2nd it changes but after that it won't change gears after I put it into drive the car will go up to 60 kph even 100 kph. What does the oxygen sensor do does it effect gear shifts if not what does, is there another sensor I need to check

What did you gap the plugs to? Did you reset the computer?

Pull plugs and gap at .028 to .030. Try again.

I'de check what the DTC is and base it off that as to where to start checking. Give all your ignition wiring some wiggles too.

Not a good idea about wiggling wires. That could loosen connections. If you have to wiggle wires to get things to work, you got other problems.:D

I have the same issue, except mine is a manual tranny. Just abut half pedal it starts, the light flashes and it seems to misfire. I need to let off and accelerate slowly and the light stops flashing. Did you get this fixed?

Thanks,
Mark

FYI - had the same symptom with "bad gas".
Thought the fuel pump was fault according to scangauge.
Took 3 tanks to flush out whatever was in the gas.

Could have just ran it out of gas, added a fuel system cleaner , then filled up.

98 Sportage sluggish and sputtering when accelerating. Check engine light on sold

My manual trans was doing the same thing. I was getting ready to pull the plugs to check for gap, spark and any plug fouling. I had to fill up the tank 1st. As soon as i started up the engine, i noticed the check engine light was off and i had full power as i accelerated. The car drove 1000X better. It appears i got bad gas. However, this weekend I will still check the plugs for the aforementioned signs.
Thanks to this forum, you guys helped me narrow it down to two problems, plugs or gas. Luckily mine was the cheapest fix.
