i have a 99 sportage and it has 80k miles on it. When i turn hard i somtimes hear a thump or a squeak. And the shocks almost dont feel like they recoil. Should i change the shocks? And when i change the shocks should i change the struts too.

Have the front end shook down at a local shop, most shops do it for free to promote their own sales.. Sears does it for free. Don't think it's shocks but shocks are recommended to be replaced every 50K miles. In my opinion, the shocks CAN last as long as 80-110k mi. I work in a shop that deals with that sorta thing.. Does the noise happen more so from weight transfer from side to side.. that would sound to me to be the sway bar and/or end links. My Idler arm is squeeking currently because it is worn. I priced it out w/ my discount to be $75 but at the moment it is only a nuisance and not wearing the tires as of yet. Being a mechanic is nice cause I decide when parts should get attention ;-)

Might be suspension bushes, try a bit of silicone spray on the rubbers.
