2003 Sedona, after timing belt and sepentine belt replacement (also, transmission flush), brake and alternator warning lights started coming on. Kia service said I need upgraded alternator (can you say $650.00!!). Local mechanic took alternator out (3.5 hours/$285.00); alternator/starter shop rebuilt alternator ($125). Ran for less than a day, then brake and alternator warning lights came back on.

Any suggestion welcome.

Does the van run alright?

I'd check the gray connector on the passenger side strut tower and make sure it's plugged in securely. Also, make sure none of the terminals inside are bent. Whoever changed the timing belt would've had to disconnect the two connectors that are there.

Check the brake fluid level too. When the brake fluid level gets low, a switch mounted in the reservoir turns the parking brake light on. If it's full, then try unplugging it and see if the light turns off.

The parking brake light and charging light are connected in the instrument cluster through a diode. Hopefully the diode didn't go bad on you, although an electronics place could change it relatively cheap.

I am sorry why did you not pay the extra $225 to Kia for the alternator surely you would be getting back your $650 now as it was not the problem.

When the warning lights are out, the van runs fine.

When the lights are on, the battery goes dead. I can charge the battery, after several hour (the van is cold by then), it starts up, no warning lights. The first time the van is shut off, and turned back on, the warning lights go back on and stay on.

The cost time line is;
1) Kia Service says it sounds like the alternator, 4 hours of labor and new alternator ($650) will probably work. They don't have the alternator, they will get to me in about a week.

2) Local alternator shop says they can rebuild the alternator ($125) and do the whole job for another $75 (same day).

3) Van brought to alternator shop; shop calls - they can't remove the alternator, suggest local service center to remove the alternator ($285).

4) Local service center removes alternator, alternator rebuilt, put back in van (time one day for entire job).

Interesting. I believe the alternator light only comes on when the alternator stops charging. I wonder if there is some sort of bad contact between the battery level wire and the alternator, making it seem like the alternator is bad.

I am no mechanic but he has said the battery goes flat

Ya, it goes dead because the alternator isn't charging it. After he recharges the battery, the van runs fine...until the battery charge runs low.

There is a wire that runs from the electrical connector on the alternator to the thick battery wire. The Alternator uses this wire to tell it how charged the battery is so it knows how much to charge it.

oh I see - so the alternator is assuming the battery does not require any charge? and therefore not charging the battery. cars are complicated... although I knew that an alternator will "get stiffer" the more charge being drawn was eg (air con, tv, stereo, lights, wipers - but did not know the alternator also worked out how much to send to the battery at the same time. or does all the components go through the battery, and the alternator just sends the charge to the battery as it is being drawn..

long gone have the days gone whereby if you car battery and alternator is caput, you just need a jump start to get the motor running.

Like Clartsonly I did not know the alternator worked out how much to send to the battery, how does it do that?

The alternator will never assume the battery does not require any charge, it will always trickle charge.

Not so long ago the battery was required to do two things turn the engine, which energised a coil and run componants.

We all know once the engine is running and you don't use a single componant
you can take the battery out and it will keep going, ( at least that use to be the case).

I see the lead and hopefully that is Manassasralph problem but having looked at the schematic I understand this lead tells how charged the battery is but it can't tell how much to charge the battery by.

An alternator is an alternator, it will regulate the charge but if your taking more out of the battery then the alternator can put in, voila a flat battery which is why I've always understood short start stop runs murder a battery.

The only thing the battery does is allow you to start the car. You can jump a car without a battery at all and it will run from the alternator alone.

The alternator's output is governed by the battery voltage detection circuit. It will always put out 14.4 volts (+/-), but the current will vary depending on the demands from the car. In theory, the alternator would deliver up to it's maximum current rating to keep the battery from going below 14.4 volts, while running of course.
