When I was replacing the engine in my '02 Spectra with 1.8L DOHC, I put in the motor without the alternator. After the motor was set and motor mounts connected, I discovered there was not enough clearance to get the alternator in. I loosened the motor mount nearest the belts, raised that side of the engine some, and was able to get enough room to wrestle the alternator in.

Hope this helps.
