I'am new here and have done a lot of searching but haven't found anyone with my problem. Have a 2005 Rio just replaced engine. Got it runing, at first it ran great now have rough idle and codes po3o2 and 304. Compression is 180 on all, replaced plugs(NGK @ 0.30), wires, coil pack still runs rough and cel still comes on. Can clear it and drive afew miles till it goes into limp. Doesn;t seem to have vac leak but not sure if son used right intake gasket. Any ideas...:confused:

Cylinder 2&4 fire off one side of the coil pack cylinder 1&3 fire off the other side check your connections going to the coil pack from the ecm they are a known issue make sure they don't look burned or corroded. I may be wrong but isn't the spark gap .044". I believe the earlier RIOs were closer gapped .027"....

Owner's manual says 28 to 32. Don't have sticker on hood, new hood on car.

Only one strand of hair left!!!

I have exhausted my 40 years of experience in mechanics. I am starting to believe in Gremlins living in a car engine. My Rio is still putting up the same codes p0302 & 304. They only show up after driving about 10 miles and after it sits overnight. Today I pulled the camshaft sensor and cleaned it, didn't help. I would like to hear from Ronjohn about the second cat problems he encountered. Did it cause his to missfire intermittently. Does anyone here know what is common between number 2 and 4 cylinders besides the cam position sensor and the ecu?:confused::confused::confused::confused: Thanks for past advice and maybe any future help.

Don't give up. Yes it would cause random missfires. I had p0300-p0304 also a p01166. My car would idle very bad. But my biggest problem was lack of power it would go down hill ok but i had now power going uphill evev a little one. It was a slow process till i had the worst of it my wife didn't tell me untill it got real bad with the power issue. I did all the stuff i knew what to do fuel pump/filter/plugs/wires cleaned the maf and IAC valve it was stuck it eventually got so bad once the engine warmed up in park i couldn't even get the engine to rev past 2-3k rpm's. I don't know whats common to cylinder's 2&4 but you did put in a new engine go over all your wiring hookups again (esp engine grounds) could cause it also and vacuum leaks give the hose down to the intake from the pcv valve I checked mine was very brittle and caused me a problem with idle. but after it was all said and done i disconnected the pipes between the 2 cats and my car came back to life instantly. So i now have a hollow 2nd cat and the car is running ok since. I wish you luck with it keep at it you will get it this was my issue you may have something totally different . Reguard's Ronjohn

I used to spend a lot of time on this forum and remember ronjohn going through his nightmare while I was having one of my own. In my case (04 Rio 140K+), I had replaced timing belt but discovered I was a tooth off on the exhaust cam (cam timing marks sit slightly pigeon toed). Then I found a tiny intake leak, then the 1st cat was clogged. and after replacing the injectors/plugs/wires/coils/catalyst/O2 sensors/intake manifold gasket/TPS/ and cleaning the IACV, and testing fuel pump and fuel pressure, and purge solenoid and every connecter under the hood, I took it to dealer to have them do a ECU reprogram( service bulletin on it). They replaced an O2 sensor(again)and said it was good. It stalled on my way home!! I took off the IACV and replaced it, and the car ran perfectly after that! That little Rio was the most annoying vehicle I have ever dealt with! It is reasonably easy to work on, but it sure liked to throw codes that seemed to have little to do with the actual problems. Once I got it all figured out, it made sense, but the process drove me crazy! The wife made me sell it, but I did learn a few things. That IACV acts just like a intake leak. It makes the fuel trim change until it stalls the car, or freaks out the MAFS and TPS, which sets it to limp mode. And all along the way it loved to toss out misfire codes (along with a dozen others...).
