I recently had to be recovered by Kia Assist to the dealer following a problem with the fan belt. I was driving away from my house when I felt a loss of the power steering, smoke was belching from under the bonnett and a high pitched screaming noise was heard from the engine.

The garage replaced the bearing to the alternator pully and fitted a new fan belt.

It seems to be ok now except that when moveing very slowly such as when reversing in to a parking bay the steering becomes very heavy.

I have an 05 Sorento XS with 8000 miles on the clock.

Has anyone experienced these sort of problems and can anyone throw any light on why I seem to be loosing the power steering when slow moveing.

I would appreciate any help or advice.

Sounds like the powersteering switch connector may have been left off/fell off. I believe it's right above the alternator, under the engine cover.

Slightly concerend you had this issue in the first place, the diesel alternator pulleys were subject to a safety recall for a similar issue.
