Good Morning,

I am experiencing an issue with the car looking for help. I drove my car about 20 miles to work. I stopped at the store, and when I came out, the car would crank but not start. I checked for codes and saw p0106, I cleared the code and the car turned over. I Drove it back 20 miles with no issue. I noticed No performance problems, rough idles, or hesitation. Im going to see if it returns. Looking for what to check, could it be as simple as a bad sensor, before I take it to a mechanic. Thanks!

No, i changed the air filter last week. this is been the first major problem i've had with the car. Battery was replaced in 2018

P0106 is actually a 'correlation' code, and is set when two or more inputs are not what the ECM considers to be in agreement with each other. That's why I asked about the battery, because there have been a number of reports from owners of multiple Kia models of 'false' P0106 being set immediately following a battery disconnect.

In any case, the P0106 does not automatically mean the MAP sensor is bad. And in your case, the not starting issue almost definitely could not have been caused by a bad MAP sensor, because the vehicle should always be able to start and run, regardless of what that sensor does. Yes, a bad MAP is likely to cause very poor performance - perhaps even sputtering on the verge of stalling. But it still should always start, even with the MAP disconnected. And IMO it was nothing but coincidence that it started after the code was cleared.

So my recommendation is to monitor for further issues, before taking it to a shop for diagnosis. If it's running well, with no codes stored, it's likely to be difficult (or impossible) for even a good mechanic to figure out what the problem is if there are no active symptoms. Ideally you want the problem to be occurring, or be able to reproduce it, in order for a shop to be able to do productive diagnosis. It would be a big plus if you were able to DIY some testing of your own, but I have no idea if that's something you're familiar with.

First off, if the P0106 (or any other code) gets set again, the freeze-frame data should be read and recorded for subsequent analysis, BEFORE the code is erased. Lots of point-in-time data is available in freeze-frame, including the MAP sensor reading at the moment the code was set. But it's all purged when the code gets erased.

Going a step beyond freeze-frame, a realtime OBD datastream reader will tell you if the MAP sensor is producing normal output, along with providing you with quite a bit of other potentially useful data. Torque for Android is the most popular setup for this, however there are many other choices available as well.

And you also want to be prepared to diagnose a future no-start (with or without codes), should that happen again. I suggest carrying a can of sensor safe starter fluid in the vehicle, and spraying a SMALL amount into the intake, if you find the vehicle cranking but not starting, in order to see if it will start and run for a few seconds on external fuel. This will send you down the correct fuel/spark pathway for additional diagnosis.

Bad performance can be caused by many things, so I can't offer any help without diagnostics on your part, such as the OBD realtime datastream that I mentioned previously. But if you don't want to get into that, then take it to a shop and get their opinion about your vehicle's performance.

It was more of a general statement. I ordered a reader that could provide that info as mine doesn’t seem to provide it without an error code

its that's not adequate, i ordered another scanner that im waiting to come tomorrow
I don't see anything wrong with the reader you just bought. If you're thinking that the reader isn't showing freeze frame and should be, that's not the case. The realtime data displayed the following 2 lines: "Number of warm-ups since DTCs cleared 1" and "Distance traveled since DTCs cleared 2 miles". This indicates that you erased the codes just prior to capturing the data stream, so there would be no freeze frame data at that point in time.

AFA the data that you posted, everything looks A-ok. However, you didn't mention if the A/C was on, which was the condition you described as producing a 'rough idle'. Another thing you didn't mention is if this rough idle with the A/C on is something new for this vehicle. That's important to know because it's not at al uncommon for a small engine such as your 1.6L to be noticeably affected by the added load from A/C.
