Recently i start hearing some bearings noise coming from rear part of my Kia.. noise is pretty stable from 40kmh - 120kmh, doesn't change if accelerating or braking the car.
My mechanic lifted the car and checked the source of noise and i was very sad from the results... was told that the noise coming from the rear diff and he think that the drive pinion bearings has died... he told me that before we start dissasembling the entire diff we may need to try to replace only the outer bearing of drive pinion, which doesn't require opening of the diff.
Does anybody familiar with this issue? is that correct that outer bearing replacement doesn't require diff to be opened?Thx

There is no outer bearing on the rear diff, the only part accessible without disassembly is the pinion shaft seal which even if bad(leaking) would not be the source of your noise. The pinion bearings going out is a fairly common repair on these year Sorento`s but the rear diff center section needs to come out to repair it, sorry for the bad news.

Can you point on both bearings of the pinion on the attached sketch.

If I were you, I'd be changing the fluid to some good syn fluid and see what happens, might help your noise greatly. How many miles do you have now? How many times have you changed your rear axle fluid before? I guessing none.

#32 is the pinion bearings, sorry about that thought the OP was asking about the diff bearings.

No those are the carrier bearings, it looks like 32 is the pinion bearing but hard to see in the tiny weeny diagram. Doesn't matter in any case, either could be causing the noise you describe, and either is a diff center out and dismantle job. In fact if I had to pull the center I would do all of them anyway.

Did some of you had same strange noises from front/rear differentials?
My car has pretty low mileage = 35k and hard to believe that the bearing need to be replaced so often...
Is there any other source for bearing noise in Sorento.. especially in models 2007,2008 & 2009...

You are correct, a diff should not wear out in such a short time but it was obvious that Kia or one of their subcontractors, must have sourced a bad lot of bearings from a supplier around 2007,8. Once the bearings are replaced with good ones, then the diff should be fine.

You could try replacing the oil with new oil of the correct type as suggested above. It doesn't have to be synthetic, but it should be a high quality hypoid (EP) oil. Sometimes diffs, particularly limited slip ones, just don't like a particular brand or type of oil, and will kick up a racket, and who's to know if it was changed at all previously, or if they used the right oil or the right amount. It is certainly easier and cheaper than ripping the diff out first. Besides if you drain the oil, and it is full of metal chips - well then you will know for sure. If it is just dirty, then change it and see how you go.

I really don't think that is the normal case. I'm on my third Sorento (24k miles, 52k miles, close to 90k miles) and no signs of transmission problems. From what I have seen on forums diff bearing problems are actually rather rare (given total numbers in service and mileages covered).

You say yours is 2008, but not engine/transmission type? This and how 4wd system is used could possibly have some bearing (excuse the pun) :rolleyes:

Yes mine is approaching 160,000 Km (100,000 miles) whole drive train is fine, silent. (but I DO change my oils reasonably regularly) It seems that there was a rash of failures in 2008 models but as I said above obviously related to a dodgy lot of bearings. There is no real design problem with the diff themselves, and most people reported no further problems once they were repaired.

I replaced the oil to none standard 75W/140 as was suggested by my mechanic, no change.
I guess i'll need to ripp my diff :-(

Were there metal bits in the oil when you changed it?

The oil was pretty clean.. very small residue of metal bits which seems to be normal and found only on the magnetic plug.

Sounds like you have caught it early then. If it is truly the bearings going then eventually there will be. Good quality oil can slow the process but not prevent it.

Rear diff repair kit

As i didn't find any repair kit for the rear differential and i was looking in web as well, i'd like to ask you if anybody had a chance to replace his sorento's rear diff bearings.
I going to do it by myself so i now looking for the parts.
What i need is pinion bearings (front & rear), pinion spacers (+ crushing), differential bearing x 2 and oil seals, spacers arround...
Does anybody have a good source of where i can get those?
